Why golf in Portugal
No country in Europe does the golf holiday quite like Portugal. The Algarve alone holds more than thirty courses within an hour of Faro airport, the weather is reliable when most of the continent is cold, and the package of golf, food, wine and coastline is among the best value in the game. The marquee names span the country: Monte Rei in the eastern Algarve, routinely ranked the finest course in Portugal, the wind blown links of Oitavos Dunes near Lisbon, and the modern dunescapes of West Cliffs on the Silver Coast. It is a destination that rewards the buddies group, the couple and the society in equal measure.
Portugal also makes travel easy. Faro and Lisbon both take direct flights from across Europe, the transfers are short, and the resorts are built for golf, with everything from five star estates at Quinta do Lago to value packages around Vilamoura. Add a culture that treats the visiting golfer warmly, green fees well below the great links of Britain and Ireland, and a season that runs from autumn through spring, and it is no surprise that Portugal is the most popular golf destination in mainland Europe.
The regions
The Algarve
The heart of Portuguese golf, with the densest cluster of courses in Europe around Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, and the marquee Monte Rei in the quieter east near Tavira.
The Lisbon Coast
Oitavos Dunes and Penha Longa within easy reach of the capital, plus the historic links at Estoril, the easiest region to combine golf with a city stay and the beaches of Cascais.
The Silver Coast
North of Lisbon, the modern courses of West Cliffs, Praia D'El Rey and Royal Obidos along a wild Atlantic shore, plus the new and highly rated links of Terras da Comporta to the south.
The courses that matter
Monte Rei, North Course
Routinely ranked the finest course in Portugal, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design where each hole sits in its own valley, with broad fairways, dramatic bunkering and immaculate conditioning near Tavira.
Oitavos Dunes
A wind blown, links inspired course in the pine and dune country near Cascais, with sandy turf, sea views and an open, running style that feels closer to Scotland than the Algarve.
Quinta do Lago, South
The course that put the Algarve on the map and a frequent Portuguese Open host, a handsome parkland of pines, lakes and the famous carry at the par 5 fifteenth, at the heart of a five star estate.
San Lorenzo
A long time European top 100 course set in the Ria Formosa nature reserve, where Joseph Lee wove the holes through pines and salt marsh with two stretches running hard along the lagoon.
Vale do Lobo, Royal
Home to the most photographed hole in Portugal, the par 3 sixteenth across three cliff top ravines, on a clifftop resort course that has been a fixture of Algarve golf for decades.
Vilamoura, Old Course
The grand old man of Vilamoura, a classic tree lined parkland through umbrella pines that remains many visitors' favourite round on the central Algarve, and the easiest base for a value trip.
Penha Longa, Atlantic
A dramatic, hilly Robert Trent Jones Jr course in the Sintra hills above Lisbon, a former Portuguese Open host with mountain and sea views and a luxury resort at its heart.
West Cliffs
A modern links laid across rolling dunes high above the Atlantic north of Lisbon, one of the best new courses in Europe of the last decade, big, exposed and thrilling in the wind.
Praia D'El Rey
A Cabell Robinson design that swings between pine forest and open clifftop links beside a long beach, the anchor of a popular Silver Coast resort an hour north of Lisbon.
Quinta do Lago, Laranjal
The quieter, inland sister at Quinta do Lago, a peaceful run through orange groves and cork oaks that many regulars now rate the pick of the estate's three courses.
Troia
A tough, pure links on a sandy peninsula south of Lisbon, a Robert Trent Jones Sr design squeezed between the Atlantic and the Sado estuary that plays far harder than its quiet setting suggests.
Terras da Comporta, Dunas
The newest star in Portuguese golf, a David McLay Kidd links through the dunes and rice fields of fashionable Comporta that has rocketed up the national ranking since opening.

When to go
| Season | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| October to May | Mild, sunny, the Algarve at its best while Europe is cold | Prime season, the busy winter window, book marquee tee times early |
| March to May and September to October | Warm, dry, the courses at their firmest | The sweet spot for weather and condition north and south |
| June to August | Hot inland, cooler on the coast, busy with families | Playable but best early in the day, softer golf rates |
The Algarve is a winter golf destination, so the high season runs opposite to most of Europe. The Lisbon and Silver coasts are breezier and warmest from April to October.

Getting there and around
Portugal is one of the easiest golf trips in Europe to reach. Faro is the gateway to the Algarve, with direct flights from across the continent and the great courses of the central Algarve within thirty minutes of the terminal, while Lisbon serves the capital's coast and the Silver Coast to the north. A hire car is useful for the eastern Algarve and the longer transfers up to West Cliffs and Comporta, though the central Algarve resorts are close enough together that many groups rely on the hotel shuttle and the occasional taxi. For a combined trip, the drive between the Algarve and Lisbon is around two and a half hours on a fast motorway.
Where to stay
Match the base to the trip. In the central Algarve, the estates at Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo put five star golf on the doorstep, while Vilamoura is the value capital, with a marina, a cluster of courses and lively evenings. For Monte Rei and the quieter east, the resort itself or the towns around Tavira keep the marquee round close. On the Lisbon coast, a Cascais or Sintra hotel pairs Oitavos and Penha Longa with the city, and the Silver Coast resorts at Praia D'El Rey anchor a trip around West Cliffs. Book the resort hotels well ahead for the winter high season.
