Quinta do Lago Laranjal
Laranjal is the third and youngest course at Quinta do Lago, opened in 2009 on a former orange grove a short drive inland from the resort. Designed by Jorge Santana da Silva, it is a par 72 of about 6,480 metres that runs through umbrella pines and rolling parkland, and it has quickly become a favourite of the Algarve regulars.

The verdict
Quinta do Lago is one of the Algarve's blue chip golf addresses, and Laranjal earns its place alongside the resort's celebrated South Course. Built on the site of an old orange plantation, which gives it its name, it is a generous, beautifully conditioned parkland that rewards good driving and offers a gentler, more strategic round than its longer sibling.
Many travelling golfers come away rating Laranjal their favourite of the Quinta do Lago courses. The conditioning is consistently excellent, the routing flows, and the par 5s give up birdies to the bold while the well guarded greens keep the card honest. For a resort week in the central Algarve, it is close to essential.

The holes worth the trip
Laranjal plays through mature umbrella pines and the remnants of the orange groves that give it its name, the fairways generous off the tee but the trouble waiting for the loose approach. It is a course of balance, with five par 5s offering scoring chances, eight par 4s of real variety and a fine set of par 3s, all on turf that is kept in superb order year round.
Water and clever bunkering protect several greens, so position off the tee sets up the best angles in. The putting surfaces are quick and true, and while Laranjal is fair and playable for the resort golfer, it has enough teeth around the greens to test the better player who lets the mind wander.
It is the Quinta do Lago course many visitors enjoy most: handsome, immaculate and strategic without ever being punishing. Slot it into a central Algarve week and it tends to be the round the group asks to replay.
