The Best Golf Courses in Portugal

Portugal is one of the great golf countries of Europe, from the dependable winter sun of the Algarve to the dunes of the Lisbon coast and the new links of the Alentejo. Here are the ten we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

Portuguese golf has three centres, and a complete top ten honours all of them. The Algarve in the south is the engine room, more than forty courses along the cliffs and pine of the southern coast, anchored by Jack Nicklaus's exceptional Monte Rei in the quieter east and the famous Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo estates in the centre. The Lisbon coast adds the windblown links land of Cascais and the cork oak hills of Sintra, while the Alentejo has lately produced the country's most talked about new course in the dunes at Comporta. We weighed design quality, conditioning, setting and championship pedigree, and we leaned toward courses a travelling golfer can realistically book.

Every fact here, from designers and opening years to host events, was checked at the time of writing. The verdicts are ours, and the order reflects our editors' view rather than any single published list, so reasonable people will reorder the top five, particularly between Monte Rei, Comporta and the best of the Lisbon coast. Where green fees are quoted elsewhere on the site they are indicative and seasonal. If you want any of these built into a costed trip, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Monte Rei, North Course

Jack Nicklaus, 2007 · eastern Algarve

For fifteen years the undisputed number one in Portugal, and still our pick. Jack Nicklaus was on site before, during and after construction of this immaculate desert style course in the quiet hills of the eastern Algarve, and the result is a rare balance of beauty and challenge, with sweeping framed fairways, generous conditioning and a famously high standard of service that extends to a buggy butler. A private feeling resort course that takes visitor play, and the round every serious golfer in Portugal should make time for.

02

Terras da Comporta, Dunas Course

David McLay Kidd, 2024 · Alentejo

The most talked about new course in Portugal and, for some ranking panels, the new national number one. David McLay Kidd, the architect of Bandon Dunes, routed the Dunas Course through the wild pine and sand of Comporta on the Alentejo coast south of Lisbon, a firm, rumpled, strategic links that feels a world away from the resort golf of the south. Young but already brilliant, it is the course pushing Portuguese golf into a new era. Set in an emerging luxury destination of beaches and rice fields.

03

Oitavos Dunes

Arthur Hills, 2001 · par 71 · Cascais

The finest links style course on the Lisbon coast, laid out by Arthur Hills through umbrella pines and natural dunes near Cascais, with the Atlantic and the Sintra hills as a backdrop. Environmentally sensitive and routed to use the wind, it plays firm and fast and has long featured on the world top 100 lists. Beautifully understated, walkable and open to visitors, it is the standout round of any trip based around Lisbon and Estoril.

04

Quinta do Lago, South Course

Algarve · eight times Portuguese Open host

The grande dame of central Algarve golf, the South Course at Quinta do Lago has hosted the Portuguese Open more times than any other and remains the flagship of one of Europe's most prestigious resort estates. Pines, lakes and the famous long carry over water on the closing stretch make it a stern but stylish test, and a recent renovation has kept it in top condition. The heart of the Golden Triangle, with the resort's other courses and the Ria Formosa lagoon alongside.

05

San Lorenzo

Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore, 1988 · Algarve

Long regarded as one of the most beautiful courses in Europe, San Lorenzo winds along the edge of the Ria Formosa nature reserve at Quinta do Lago, finishing with a celebrated run of holes beside the lagoon and the sea. Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore made full use of the natural terrain, and the closing stretch along the water is among the most photographed in Portuguese golf. Access has traditionally been tied to the Dona Filipa and resort guests, so plan the stay around it.

06

West Cliffs

Cynthia Dye, 2017 · Obidos · Silver Coast

A modern links masterpiece on the Silver Coast north of Lisbon, where Cynthia Dye, of the famous Dye dynasty, took a strip of prime dune land beside Praia D'El Rey and created a dramatic, rolling course high above the Atlantic. Wind, elevation and ocean views give it a genuine links character rare on the mainland, and it has climbed the European rankings fast since opening. A long but rewarding drive from Lisbon, often paired with Praia D'El Rey next door.

07

Penha Longa, Atlantic Course

Robert Trent Jones Jr, 1992 · Sintra

A dramatic Robert Trent Jones Jr course set in the wooded hills of the Sintra Cascais natural park, with sharp elevation changes, mountain and ocean views and the ruins of a historic estate alongside. It has hosted the Portuguese Open and remains the headline round near Lisbon for those who want hills and grandeur over links. Attached to a five star resort in one of the most beautiful corners of the country, an easy pairing with Oitavos and the coast.

08

Praia D'El Rey

Cabell Robinson, 1997 · Obidos

The course that put the Silver Coast on the golf map, a Cabell Robinson design that mixes pine framed inland holes with a spectacular run through the dunes beside the Atlantic. More forgiving than its neighbour West Cliffs but every bit as scenic in places, it anchors a large beach and golf resort and makes the natural base for a couple of days on the coast north of Lisbon. Open, well conditioned and a firm favourite with visiting groups.

09

Dom Pedro Victoria and the Vilamoura Old Course

Frank Pennink, 1969 · Algarve

Vilamoura is the busy, sociable heart of Algarve golf, and two courses define it. The Old Course, Frank Pennink's classic from 1969, is a beloved tree lined parkland of towering umbrella pines, while the modern Arnold Palmer designed Victoria course has hosted the Portugal Masters on the DP World Tour for years. Together they anchor a resort town with hotels, marina and nightlife on the doorstep, the easy social base for an Algarve group.

10

Vale do Lobo, Royal Course

Algarve · the famous cliff top 16th

Home to perhaps the most photographed hole in European golf, the par 3 16th on the Royal Course, where the tee shot carries three cliff top ravines high above the Atlantic. The wider course is a mature, attractive resort layout in the heart of the Golden Triangle, and the famous hole alone earns its place on any Portuguese list. The Vale do Lobo estate, with its beach, square and second Ocean course, is one of the Algarve's most established luxury bases.

Portugal golf questions

What is the best golf course in Portugal?

Monte Rei's North Course, Jack Nicklaus's immaculate 2007 design in the eastern Algarve, is our pick and was the undisputed national number one for fifteen years. The newer Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta by David McLay Kidd has lately challenged it at the top of some ranking panels. Reasonable people reorder the top five, but those two anchor any serious list.

When is the best time to play golf in Portugal?

The Algarve is a dependable winter sun destination and plays well from October to May, with spring the sweet spot for warmth and condition. The Lisbon coast and the Alentejo are at their best in spring and autumn and can be windy. July and August are hot in the south, so most golfers avoid the peak summer for the cooler shoulder months.

Where is the best golf in Portugal?

Three regions stand out: the Algarve in the south, with Monte Rei, Quinta do Lago, San Lorenzo and Vilamoura, the Lisbon coast around Cascais and Sintra, home to Oitavos and Penha Longa, and the Silver Coast and Alentejo to the north and south of the capital, with West Cliffs, Praia D'El Rey and Comporta. A classic trip pairs the Algarve with a few days near Lisbon.

Can you play these courses as a visitor?

Most are resort or daily fee courses that welcome visitors, though several, such as San Lorenzo and parts of the Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo estates, give priority or sole access to resort guests, and Monte Rei feels private though it takes visitor play. Booking the right stay is the key to access. Always confirm directly before booking.
