Who this trip suits

A luxury tour of Spain is the trip for the group that wants tournament golf and an easy climate in the same week. The headline courses here have hosted the Ryder Cup, the Solheim Cup and decades of European Tour golf, yet the sun is reliable from autumn through spring and the hotels along the coast are among the best in Europe. It suits buddies groups who want a serious test without the weather lottery of a links trip, couples who pair Valderrama with Marbella and the Ronda wine country, and small societies who want marquee names a short transfer apart. The Costa del Sol alone holds more top tier courses within an hour than almost anywhere on earth, and Catalonia adds a second cluster around Girona an easy flight or drive away.

If your group has one round it must play, make it Valderrama, the Robert Trent Jones masterpiece that staged the 1997 Ryder Cup. Add Finca Cortesin, a recent Solheim Cup host, and the original Sotogrande course just down the road, and you have the strongest three day stretch in continental golf. Pair it with two or three nights in the Catalan hills at Camiral for a grand tour, or keep it tight on the Costa del Sol for a long weekend that still feels like the trip of the year.

The courses to build around

Real Club Valderrama, the cork oak lined fairways at Sotogrande, Spain

Real Club Valderrama

Robert Trent Jones, 1974 · Par 71 · Indicative 2026 green fee around €600

The finest course in continental Europe and the host of the 1997 Ryder Cup, threaded through ancient cork oaks above Sotogrande. The par 5 seventeenth is one of the most argued over holes in the game. A private members club that releases very limited visitor times, usually Monday to Thursday, so plan it first and let an operator secure the tee.

Finca Cortesin golf course above the Mediterranean near Casares, Spain

Finca Cortesin

Cabell Robinson, 2007 · Par 72 · Solheim Cup 2023 host

A modern championship layout above the sea near Casares, over 7,000 yards of generous fairways and large, fast greens that hosted the 2023 Solheim Cup and the Volvo World Match Play. The hotel is one of the most luxurious on the coast, which makes Finca Cortesin a natural anchor for the southern leg of the tour.

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, Robert Trent Jones parkland in Andalusia, Spain

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande

Robert Trent Jones, 1964 · Par 72 · From around €250

The first course Robert Trent Jones built in Europe and the one he named among his five personal favorites, a serene parkland of umbrella pines and cork oaks beside Valderrama. Quieter and more relaxed than its neighbor, it is the connoisseur's second round in Sotogrande and a perfect complement to a Valderrama morning.

Camiral Stadium course at PGA Catalunya in the Girona hills, Spain

Camiral, Stadium Course

Gallardo and Coles, 2000 · Par 72 · Girona, Catalonia

Spain's highest ranked inland course, set in pine and lakeland near Girona and long a fixture in Europe's top 100. Formerly the PGA Catalunya Stadium course, it is a strong, strategic test with the famous water carry at the par 4 twelfth, and the resort and hotel make it the obvious base for a Catalan leg.

Day 1

Arrive Malaga, settle on the Costa del Sol

Fly into Malaga, meet the driver and head west along the coast to Marbella or Sotogrande. An easy evening to settle in, with dinner overlooking the Mediterranean.

Day 2

Finca Cortesin

Open the golf on the Solheim Cup host above Casares, lunch at the hotel, then an afternoon by the pool before a long dinner in the old town of Casares or Estepona.

Day 3

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande

The serene Robert Trent Jones parkland as a warm up for the headline round, played at an unhurried pace among the pines, with the afternoon free in Sotogrande.

Day 4

Valderrama

The round of the trip on the 1997 Ryder Cup course. Take a caddie, work your way through the cork oaks to the seventeenth, then a celebratory dinner in Sotogrande.

Day 5

North to Catalonia

A short flight or a scenic transfer north toward Girona and the Camiral resort, checking in for the Catalan leg with the afternoon at leisure.

Day 6

Camiral, Stadium Course

Spain's best inland course among the pines and lakes, ideally with a second loop on the shorter Tour course or a visit into Girona's medieval old town.

Day 7

Barcelona, or fly home

An easy run down to Barcelona for a final night and a city dinner, or a direct flight home from Girona or Barcelona at the end of the tour.

Best time to book

Southern Spain plays all year, but the sweet spots are spring and autumn, roughly March to May and September to November, when the days are warm and dry and the courses are at their firmest. Winter, December to February, is the busy high season on the Costa del Sol, mild and sunny but with the priority tee sheets filling fast, while midsummer is hot inland and best played in the early morning. Book the marquee rounds as early as you can: Valderrama releases only a handful of visitor times each week, and the best Finca Cortesin and Camiral mornings go months ahead. A shoulder season trip trades a fraction of the certainty for quieter fairways and softer rates.

Indicative 2026 fees run around €600 at Valderrama, from around €308 at Finca Cortesin, from around €250 at Sotogrande and from around €125 to €200 at Camiral depending on season and buggy. Always confirm directly before booking.
