Who this trip suits
Portugal is the most forgiving golf trip in Europe to organize and the easiest to love. Short flights, gentle driving distances, hotels that suit couples and buddies alike, and a run of courses good enough that nobody goes home disappointed.
- Buddies groups who want four or five strong rounds without a punishing drive between them.
- Couples and mixed ability groups, since the Algarve pairs resort comfort with playable layouts.
- Winter golfers chasing reliable sun from October to May when northern courses are shut.
- Anyone who wants to combine the Algarve with a day or two on the Lisbon coast.
The courses to build around
Every fact below was checked at the time of writing. Green fees are indicative and seasonal, so treat them as a guide rather than a quote.

Monte Rei North
Routinely rated Portugal's finest. A secluded Nicklaus design with single tee spacing, immaculate conditioning and total privacy near the Spanish border.
Quinta do Lago South
The grande dame of the Golden Triangle, threaded through pines and lakes and a regular host of the Portuguese Open.
San Lorenzo
Along the Ria Formosa lagoon, all birdsong and pine, with two of the best closing holes in the country.
Vale do Lobo Royal
Home of the iconic clifftop 16th, a carry over three ravines that is the signature shot of the Algarve.
Oitavos Dunes
Near Cascais under the Sintra hills, a breezy seaside layout often rated among the best in mainland Europe.
West Cliffs
A links style course above the Atlantic on the Silver Coast, stretching close to 7,000 yards over rumpled dune land.
A sample structure
One way to shape the week. We tune the order to your tee times, hotel and handicaps, never the other way around.
Arrive into Faro and settle into the Golden Triangle. An afternoon nine to find your legs, then Quinta do Lago South the next morning while the greens are at their quickest.
The marquee round at Monte Rei North, played with the wide tee spacing that makes it feel like a private club. Long lunch on the terrace afterward.
San Lorenzo or Vale do Lobo Royal, then an easy evening by the water. This is the day to bank the clifftop 16th photograph.
Optional shift north to the Lisbon coast for Oitavos Dunes and West Cliffs, with Cascais or Obidos as your base before flying home from Lisbon.
Indicative costs
These are third party green fees and package ranges gathered while writing this page, not our pricing. We are a guide and trip planner, never the operator.

Best time to go and to book
The sweet spots are April to June and September to October, when the heat is gentle and the courses are at their best. December and January are the cheapest and still very playable, which is why the Algarve is Europe's winter golf capital. July and August are hot and busiest with general tourism, so prices climb. Book marquee rounds such as Monte Rei four to eight weeks ahead in high season, and lock hotels earlier still for the Christmas and February half term windows.

Portugal golf holidays, answered
How many rounds should I plan in a week in Portugal?
Four to six is the comfortable range for a seven night trip, leaving room for a rest day, a long lunch and the drive between the Algarve and Lisbon if you combine both.
Is the Algarve or Lisbon better for golf?
The Algarve has the greater concentration of top courses and the most reliable winter sun. The Lisbon coast offers Oitavos Dunes and West Cliffs plus a city and beach culture, and the two combine well into one week.
What is the cheapest time to play golf in Portugal?
December and January carry the lowest green fees and package prices while staying very playable. The trade off is shorter daylight and the occasional Atlantic front.
Do I need a handicap certificate?
Most resort courses welcome all comers, though a few premium layouts ask for a handicap certificate or a reasonable standard. We confirm any requirement when we cost your trip.
