Belas Clube de Campo, parkland fairway and lake in the Sintra hills northwest of Lisbon, Portugal
Course profile · Belas, Lisbon district, Portugal

Belas Clube de Campo

Lisbon's big, bold parkland in the hills. Rocky Roquemore carved Belas through the valleys below the Serra de Sintra and opened it in 1997, a par 72 of about 6,109 metres that tumbles over real elevation around a string of lakes. Half an hour from the city, it is the most muscular of the capital's golf and a fine partner to the Estoril coast.

The verdict

The Lisbon golf scene is usually associated with the genteel layouts of the Estoril coast and the lush parkland of Penha Longa. Belas is the outlier, bigger in scale and bolder in shape, set inland in the green hills below Sintra. Rocky Roquemore, the American architect behind much of Portugal's best resort golf, used the dramatic terrain rather than fighting it, and the course opened in 1997 as the centrepiece of a country club community.

It is a par 72 of about 6,109 metres, around 6,680 yards from the back, and it plays every bit of it because the land moves so much. Two nine hole loops swing around strategically placed lakes, through forested hills and deep valleys, with the Serra de Sintra as a backdrop on the high holes. It is a good walk that most prefer to ride, a proper test for the better player and a memorable one for everyone, and it slots neatly into a Lisbon trip alongside the coast courses.

The holes worth the trip

Elevation is the theme. Belas rolls up and down the valley sides, so judging the shot is half the challenge: uphill approaches that play a club or two longer, downhill tee shots that bound on, and stances that are rarely dead flat. Roquemore put the lakes where they matter, in the driving zones and short of greens, so the line off the tee sets up everything that follows.

The par 5s give the longer hitter a chance to make up ground, but most reward a layup to a comfortable number rather than a gamble over water. The short holes are strong and varied, several played across or alongside the lakes, and the wind that funnels through the valleys can change the club from one day to the next.

Take a buggy unless you are fit and unhurried, keep the ball below the hole on the quick greens, and trust the yardage book on the elevation changes. Belas is a thinking player's course dressed up as a holiday round, and the views toward Sintra from the high points are reason enough to make the short drive from Lisbon.

Where to stay nearby

Belas sits between the city and the coast, which makes for two natural bases. Lisbon itself is half an hour away and gives you a great city break wrapped around the golf, with the historic neighbourhoods, the river and the restaurants all on hand in the evenings.

For a more golf focused stay, the Estoril and Cascais coast to the south puts you among a cluster of courses and a strip of seafront hotels, with Belas, Penha Longa and the coast layouts all within a short drive. It is an easy region to build a multi course Lisbon trip around.
