The verdict
Dom Pedro Victoria is the Algarve's championship statement. Arnold Palmer routed it across the Vilamoura plain in 2004 as a modern tournament venue, and it has hosted the Portugal Masters on the DP World Tour every year since 2007. This is big, bold, American style golf: wide manicured fairways, generous bunkering, water in play on a string of holes and immaculate conditioning that the resort prides itself on.
For the travelling golfer it offers the rare thrill of playing a course you have watched on television, walking the same closing holes that have decided a European Tour title. It is the standout round in a region thick with quality, and with three more Dom Pedro courses and the rest of Vilamoura on the doorstep it anchors one of the easiest, sunniest golf trips in Europe. The course reopened in early 2025 after a programme of redevelopment work.

The holes worth the trip
The Victoria rewards length and nerve. Palmer gave it wide, inviting fairways but defended the scoring with water, deep bunkering and large, undulating greens, so the challenge is less about finding the short grass than about controlling distance and angle into well protected pins. From the back tees at over 7,200 yards it is a genuine test; from the forward markers it is an enjoyable, generous resort round.
The signature is the par 5 17th, the longest hole on the course at around 539 metres, named Cascatas, Portuguese for waterfalls, for the cascading water that runs down the right of the fairway through a chain of lakes. It is a dramatic, reachable in three three shotter that sets up a grandstand finish, and it has played a decisive role in more than one Portugal Masters.
Played in the reliable Algarve sunshine on immaculate turf, the Victoria feels every inch the tournament course. It is the round of the trip for most visitors to Vilamoura, a chance to test your game on a true championship stage.
