The verdict
Balaia Golf is not trying to be a championship course, and that is exactly its appeal. Opened in 2001 as the golf heart of the Balaia Golf Village resort near Albufeira, and laid out by Southern Golf, it is a nine hole par 27 made up entirely of par 3 holes. Across roughly 984 meters, the longest hole is about 165 meters and the shortest a flick at 67, so this is golf about touch and trajectory rather than power.
That makes it one of the friendliest courses on the Algarve. It is ideal for beginners and juniors taking their first steps, for improving golfers drilling their irons and short game, and for families and couples who want a relaxed, quick round in the sun. For a serious player it is a fine warm up or an easy evening nine; for a learner it is a genuinely encouraging place to fall for the game.

The holes worth the trip
The entire round is an exercise in iron play. With nine par 3 holes and no driver to bail you out, every shot is an approach, which is what makes Balaia such a useful and enjoyable course. The holes vary nicely in length and demand, from gentle wedges to the longer mid iron at 165 meters, so you work through most of the short irons in the bag over the loop.
The greens are the test. Hitting and holding them, judging the pace of putts and getting up and down when you miss are the whole game here, which is why the course is as good for a low handicapper sharpening touch as it is for a beginner learning the basics. It is well kept, walkable and quick, with the relaxed feel of a resort academy course rather than a stern examination.
Set within the Balaia Golf Village with its hotel, pools and tennis, it is built for a holiday rhythm: a relaxed nine before lunch, an evening round with the family, or a confidence building loop before tackling the bigger courses nearby. As an introduction to golf or a low pressure round in the sun, Balaia does its job beautifully.

Where to stay nearby
The obvious base is the Balaia Golf Village itself, an apartment and villa resort with the course, pools, tennis and restaurants on site, well suited to a family or a mixed group where not everyone is a serious golfer. The wider Albufeira area adds hotels, apartments and resorts at every level within a short drive.
Balaia works best as the easygoing nine within a fuller central Algarve golf trip. Pair it with the clifftop Pine Cliffs, the links style Salgados, and the championship Vilamoura Old Course. See our Golf in Portugal hub to shape the route.
