Santo Antonio Golf
Santo Antonio is the wild card of the western Algarve, an 18 hole course that the Spanish architect Pepe Gancedo carved through the valleys near Budens in 1987 under the name Parque da Floresta. A par 71 of severe gradients and forced carries, hidden away near the Costa Vicentina, it is one of the most dramatic and divisive layouts in Portuguese golf.

The verdict
Santo Antonio sits beyond Lagos in the far western Algarve, near Budens and the cliffs of the Costa Vicentina, and it is the course you go out of your way for. Pepe Gancedo, the Spanish amateur champion turned architect known for working dramatic terrain, routed it through steep valleys and ridges in 1987, and almost nothing about it is gentle. The fairways climb and plunge, several shots are blind or semi blind, and the par 71 of about 5,712 meters punishes the crooked far more than the short.
It divides golfers, and that is the point. Some find the elevation changes and forced carries exhausting; others love it as the most characterful round in the region, a true escape from the resort golf further east. As a contrast day on a western Algarve trip it is unforgettable. See our best of Portugal ranking and the golf in Portugal guide.

Designer, opening year and layout verified June 2026 from Santo Antonio, GolfPass and Algarve golf sources. The course was designed by Pepe Gancedo and opened in 1987 near Budens as Parque da Floresta, a par 71 of about 5,712 meters through steep valleys; the resort is now branded Santo Antonio Villas, Golf and Spa. Green fees are an indicative 2026 guide from around 87 euros in the shoulder seasons to about 124 euros at peak, often quoted with a shared buggy. The holes worth the trip
Gancedo built his reputation on routing golf across land most architects would have walked away from, and Santo Antonio is that philosophy at full volume. Tee shots drop into valleys and approaches climb back out, with greens perched on shelves and tucked behind ridges, so the player who plots a careful way around scores far better than the one who simply hits it hard.
The forced carries are the talking point. Several holes ask you to fly a barranca or a stretch of scrub from the tee, and the wind funneling through the valleys off the nearby Atlantic makes the right club a moving target. There is little run out on the firmer holes, so distance control into the angled greens is everything.
What stays with you is the seclusion and the scale. Surrounded by hills and the protected coast of the Costa Vicentina, with barely a building in sight on many holes, it feels a world away from the busier Algarve, a course you remember hole by hole long after the round.
