Dom Pedro Millennium
The Millennium is one of the five Dom Pedro courses at Vilamoura, opened in 2000 to a Martin Hawtree design. A par 72 of about 6,176 metres, it blends nine holes carved through the umbrella pines with nine more open, water guarded holes, and it is a popular, accessible round at the heart of the Algarve's busiest golf hub.

The verdict
Vilamoura is the engine room of Algarve golf, and the Millennium is its approachable all rounder. Martin Hawtree built it around the turn of the century, pairing a wooded front stretch through the famous Vilamoura pines with more open holes where water and wider fairways come into play. It is not the marquee course in the complex, but it is one of the most enjoyable to play.
For a travelling group, the Millennium earns its place as the relaxed, fairly priced round in a Vilamoura week that might also take in the Old Course and the Victoria. It is forgiving enough for higher handicaps yet varied enough to keep better players interested, and the location could hardly be more convenient.

The holes worth the trip
The Millennium splits neatly in character. Several holes run through the dense umbrella pines that define Vilamoura golf, tight and tree lined, asking for a straight tee ball. The remaining holes open out across more generous ground where lakes and bunkering provide the defense and the longer hitter can let the driver go.
The greens are honest and the par 3s well varied, and while the Millennium does not have the championship pedigree of the Old Course next door, it is a satisfying, playable design that flatters good iron play. The contrast between the wooded and open stretches keeps the round interesting from first tee to last.
It is the value round of the Vilamoura collection, central, well kept and fun, and it pairs naturally with the resort's tougher courses for a balanced few days of Algarve golf.
