Why golf in Thailand
Thailand is the best value premium golf trip in the world, and one of the most enjoyable. The country has more than two hundred courses, a cluster of them genuine championship layouts that have hosted the LPGA and the Asian Tour, and the standard of conditioning, clubhouses and service is consistently high. What sets it apart is the experience around the golf: a caddie accompanies every round by tradition, the welcome is famously warm, and the food, the spas and the beaches turn a golf trip into a holiday the whole group remembers.
For a travelling golfer the maths is compelling. Green fees at the best courses are a fraction of what the same quality costs in Europe or the United States, the hotels are excellent value, and the regions are close enough to combine two or three on a single week or ten day trip. Add reliable cool season weather from November to February and direct flights into Bangkok and Phuket, and Thailand becomes a destination golfers return to year after year.
The regions
Hua Hin
The birthplace of Thai golf and a relaxed royal beach town three hours from Bangkok, home to the award winning Black Mountain and Banyan and the historic Royal Hua Hin, the connoisseur's base.
Pattaya
The biggest golf cluster in the country, with more than twenty courses led by the two Siam Country Club layouts that host the LPGA, an easy two hours from Bangkok's main airport.
Bangkok
Championship golf on the doorstep of the capital, from Alpine and Thai Country Club to the immaculate Nikanti, ideal for a city and golf combination or a stopover.
Phuket and the south
Tropical resort golf on the southern beaches, led by Blue Canyon and Red Mountain, the place to pair championship rounds with the Andaman Sea and island life.
Chiang Mai and the north
Cooler, mountainous golf around the northern capital, including Alpine Chiangmai and Summit Green Valley, a quieter region with a different landscape and culture.
Caddie culture
Across every region a caddie is included on each round by tradition, reading lines, carrying clubs and adding to the famous Thai welcome, one of the joys of golf here.
The courses that matter
Black Mountain
Repeatedly rated the best course in Thailand and one of the finest in Asia, a multiple award winner of wide fairways, water and immaculate conditioning that has hosted the Asian Tour, the standout round of any Hua Hin trip.
Siam Country Club, Plantation
One of three layouts at Siam Country Club, a dramatic course carved from former pineapple and tapioca plantations with elevation and water, part of the complex that hosts the Honda LPGA Thailand.
Siam Country Club, Old Course
The original and most prestigious Siam Country Club course, a long time host of the Honda LPGA Thailand and one of the most revered championship venues in the country, beautifully matured and presented.
Banyan
A consistently top ranked Hua Hin course set among coconut groves and hills, recognised on the world lists by Rolex and a perennial top three Thai golf destination, an easy partner to Black Mountain.
Blue Canyon, Canyon Course
The most famous course in the south, a former host of the Johnnie Walker Classic where Tiger Woods won, carved through an old tin mine and rubber plantation with the signature water carry at the closing holes.
Royal Hua Hin
The oldest golf course in Thailand, laid out beside the railway station in 1924 and steeped in royal history, a charming, walkable parkland round that every golf trip to Hua Hin should include for its place in the story.

When to go
| Season | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| November to February | Cool, dry and comfortable, the most reliable weather | Prime season, book the courses and hotels well ahead |
| March to May | Hot and humid, building toward the rains | Early tee times and plenty of water, softer rates |
| June to October | The monsoon, with afternoon downpours | Mornings often playable, the cheapest and quietest golf |
The monsoon timing varies between the Gulf coast and the Andaman side, so the south and the east can run on slightly different seasons. A morning tee time is wise in the warmer and wetter months whatever the region.

Getting there and around
Thailand has two main gateways for a golf trip. Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport is the busiest, with the Pattaya courses around two hours away and Hua Hin about three, while Phuket International serves the southern beaches and courses directly. Bangkok is a major hub from Europe, the Middle East and Australia, so connections are easy from almost anywhere. Once on the ground, a private driver is the smart choice, since traffic around the capital is heavy and a car with a driver between regions costs little by western standards and keeps the trip relaxed.
Where to stay
Match the base to the region. In Hua Hin, a beachfront resort puts Black Mountain and Banyan within a short drive and pairs the golf with the royal town's calm. In Pattaya, stay near Jomtien for the Siam Country Club courses, and in Bangkok a city hotel works for a stopover with golf on the outskirts. In the south, the Phuket beach resorts combine Blue Canyon and Red Mountain with the Andaman Sea. Book the cool season hotels well ahead, and let one planner line up the golf, the transfers and the beach time.
