Toscana Valley

A Bob McFarland design in the cool Khao Yai hills, Toscana Valley pairs serious golf with an Italian fantasy: a Tuscan themed village, vineyards and a par 72 of about 7,087 yards routed beneath dramatic limestone cliffs and around man made lakes. Opened in 2009, it is one of the most photogenic rounds within reach of Bangkok.

The verdict

Khao Yai is Thailand's escape to the hills, a cooler, greener upland a few hours northeast of Bangkok dotted with vineyards, resorts and a clutch of good golf, and Toscana Valley is its most theatrical course. The owners leaned hard into an Italian theme, building a Tuscan style village of terracotta and stone at the heart of the property, but behind the styling is a genuine test: Bob McFarland, working with Chanat Ruangkritya, laid out a par 72 of more than 7,000 yards that uses the natural drama of the limestone karst and the valley's lakes to fine effect.

It is resort golf with real scenery, the cliffs framing several holes and the elevation giving the round a sense of grandeur you do not get on the flat courses of the central plains. For the travelling golfer, it is the centrepiece of a Khao Yai weekend, an easy and rewarding break from the heat of Bangkok with wine country and a national park on the doorstep.

The holes worth the trip

The setting does much of the heavy lifting here, but the golf holds up. McFarland routed the holes to make the most of the elevation changes and the backdrop of limestone cliffs, so tee shots play uphill and down across rolling terrain, and judging the adjusted yardages is a real part of scoring. The cooler Khao Yai air also flatters the ball flight, a welcome change from the lowland heat.

Water is the chief hazard, the valley's lakes pressing in on several holes and demanding committed carries and careful club selection. The greens are large and generous in places, but the smart play is to respect the trouble and take the wider lines when the cliffs and water tighten the picture.

In the rainy season a waterfall tumbles down the karst behind the course, adding to the spectacle, and the round finishes back at the Tuscan village for a glass of the local wine. It is golf as an experience, and a thoroughly enjoyable one.
