The verdict
Summit Green Valley Chiangmai Country Club opened in 1990 to a design by the American architect Dennis Griffiths, who also laid out the well known Thai Country Club in Bangkok. It sits in the Mae Sa valley a short drive north of Chiang Mai, an 18 hole par 72 measuring around 7,200 yards from the back tees, framed by palm trees and the foothills that ring the northern plain. Water is the defining feature, in play on nearly every hole, so the round is less about raw length and more about position and nerve.
For travelling golfers it is one of the established names of Chiang Mai golf, a parkland test with mature trees, generous landing areas and lakes that punish a loose shot. It also runs floodlit night golf over the full eighteen, a genuinely different way to play in the cooler evening air. Pair it with the cooler northern climate and the city's food and temples and it makes a strong case for adding Chiang Mai to any Thailand golf trip.

The holes worth the trip
Griffiths routed Summit Green Valley around a network of lakes, and the water is what stays with you. By most accounts it can come into play on nearly every hole, so the premium is on a calm, well placed tee shot and a clear head over the second. The fairways are generous enough off the tee, lined with mature palms, and the trouble is the carry and the angle rather than rough or blind shots.
The par 4 ninth is the hole golfers remember, a stout two shotter of around 416 yards that asks for a tee shot over water with sand on either side of the landing zone, then a second across more water to an elevated, island style green ringed by tall palms. The par 3 sixteenth is the prettiest test on the card, played all the way across a large lake to a shallow green that gives back nothing to a misjudged distance. Between them the course mixes reachable and demanding holes so the scorecard swings on how you handle the water.
For the visiting golfer the appeal is variety and atmosphere. Take a caddie who knows the carries, play for the dry side of every lake, and if the schedule allows come back for a floodlit night round, when the lit lakes and palms make for one of the more memorable evenings in Thai golf. It is a course that rewards discipline over power.

Where to stay nearby
Summit Green Valley sits between Chiang Mai city and the resorts of the Mae Sa valley, so most golfers base themselves in or around the city and drive out for the round. Chiang Mai offers everything from boutique hotels in the old town to riverside resorts, with the temples, markets and food on the doorstep.
The valley itself has a cluster of spa and nature resorts that suit a quieter, greener base, handy if you plan a night round and an early start the next day. Most travelling golfers fold Summit Green Valley into a northern Thailand trip that uses Chiang Mai as a hub, pairing it with the region's other courses and the city's culture for a few relaxed days.
