Blue Canyon Lakes Course
The younger sibling at Phuket's most famous golf address, the Lakes Course threads par 72 through the lakes and canyons of an old tin mine, a long, watery test that has hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic and the world's best.

The verdict
Blue Canyon made Phuket a golf destination, and while the Canyon Course took the early fame, the Lakes Course is the bigger, more modern test. Yoshikazu Kato opened it in 1999 on the same reclaimed tin mining ground, using the water filled canyons and meandering creeks that the digging left behind, and the result is a par 72 of about 7,129 yards where water is in play on most of the back nine.
It is a championship layout in the real sense, having hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic with Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and the rest of the traveling circus, and it asks for accurate, committed ball striking with the bigger flighted shots that the tropical air and the carries demand. For the visiting golfer it is the headline round on a Phuket trip, the jungle framing every hole and the abandoned mine reborn as one of Asia's best known courses.

The holes worth the trip
Water defines the round. The old tin mine left lakes and canyons that Kato turned into hazards, and from the turn inward they press on almost every shot, demanding carries off the tee and precise approaches to greens guarded by the blue water the club is named for.
The course stretches past 7,000 yards and the humid tropical air robs the ball of a little run, so length is a real asset here, but accuracy matters more, with the jungle and the lakes punishing anything loose. The bunkering is clean and the greens true, and the back nine in particular plays as a proper championship test.
Conditioning is excellent on a course used to hosting elite events, the fairways lush and the greens quick, and the setting, dense jungle and still water on a reclaimed mine, gives the Lakes a character quite unlike the resort courses elsewhere on the island.
