Laguna Golf Phuket
Once a worked out tin mine, now a lush garden of lagoons and palms at the heart of the Laguna Phuket resort on Bang Tao Beach. Paul Jansen rebuilt the course in 2014, reversing the nines and bringing the water to life, and the result is an easy walking, caddie tended resort round that has become one of the most popular in Thailand.

The verdict
Laguna Golf Phuket is the golfing heart of one of Asia's best known integrated resorts. The course first opened in 1993 on former tin mine land in the northwest of the island, and in 2014 the Canadian architect Paul Jansen carried out a full rebuild, reversing the front and back nines, sharpening the contours and weaving the lagoons through the round. It now plays as a par 71 of around 6,756 yards, lush, tropical and immaculately kept.
It is a resort course in the best sense, comfortable to walk, kind enough off the tee to keep a holiday foursome happy, yet given real strategy by the water and the rebuilt greens. Caddies tend every round, as across Thailand, and the setting among the lagoons, palms and resort lakes is a large part of the appeal. For a golfer basing a Phuket holiday in the Laguna complex, it is the round you can stroll to, and a fine warm up for the bigger tests in the Blue Canyon valleys nearby.

The holes worth the trip
Water defines the round. Jansen's 2014 rebuild brought the resort lagoons and lakes into play on hole after hole, so the strategy is about choosing lines that flirt with the water without finding it. The fairways are generous enough for the holiday golfer, but the rebuilt greens have real movement, and the par 71 routing tightens its grip over the closing holes among the lagoons.
Reversing the nines gave the course a stronger finish, and the run home plays back toward the resort with water close at hand. Throughout, the conditioning is tropical lush, the palms and gardens immaculate, and the caddies, included in the round, read the subtle borrows on greens that can be hard to judge in the heat.
It is not a brawny championship test, and it does not pretend to be. It is a beautifully kept, easy walking resort course where the pleasure is in the setting and the gentle risk and reward around the lagoons, exactly what most golfers want from a Phuket holiday round.

Where to stay nearby
The obvious base is one of the hotels within the Laguna Phuket complex itself, a cluster of resorts sharing the lagoons, beach and the golf course on Bang Tao. Staying inside the complex means you can walk or take a short buggy to the first tee and enjoy preferential rates, along with the beach and the resort restaurants.
The wider west coast of Phuket, from Bang Tao down toward Surin and Kamala, offers a deep field of beach hotels for those who want a different base, and Laguna pairs naturally with the Blue Canyon courses a short drive away for a fuller Phuket golf week.
