The verdict

This is one of the best courses in Thailand, and one of the best for views. It opened in 2008 as Banyan Golf Club, won Asia Pacific's best new course award the following year, and was renamed Pineapple Valley Golf Club in 2024 in tribute to the land it occupies, a former pineapple plantation in the hills a short way inland from the beach resort of Hua Hin. The Thai architect Pirapon Namatra used the rolling terrain to dramatic effect, with elevated tees, plunging valleys and the mountains as a backdrop.

It is a genuine championship test, a par 72 stretching to about 7,361 yards, but the abiding memory is the scenery and the sense of space. The conditioning is excellent, the elevation changes give the round its drama, and a Thai style clubhouse rounds out an experience that has collected awards for both the course and the building. Paired with Hua Hin's easy beach resort atmosphere, it makes an ideal centrepiece for a Thailand golf trip.

The holes worth the trip

Pineapple Valley is all about elevation and outlook. Pirapon Namatra routed the holes up and down the plantation hills, so many tee shots play from high ground to fairways below, and the views over the valleys and out to the mountains are a constant reward. The conditioning is among the best in the Hua Hin area, the fairways generous but the green complexes demanding.

The front nine eases through the lower ground before the course climbs into its most dramatic stretch, with downhill par 4s and short holes played across the folds of the old plantation. Position off the tee matters more than raw length here, because the angles into the greens and the run of the ball on the slopes decide the score.

The closing holes return through the valleys toward the clubhouse, building to a finish that has helped the course collect a shelf of awards since it opened. It is a complete resort championship experience, and a round here is reason enough to base a Thailand golf trip in Hua Hin.
