How we chose them

Winter golf is about reliability first. The northern hemisphere off season, roughly November to March, is peak season for these destinations precisely because the weather holds: warm, dry, settled days when the courses at home are unplayable. We weighed how dependable the winter climate really is, the quality and depth of the golf, how easy the destination is to reach and get around, and the value on offer, since a winter escape should feel like a treat, not a remortgage. We leaned toward places a travelling golfer can build a full week around, with good courses, good hotels and a real holiday alongside the golf.

A note on the southern hemisphere: for South Africa and the like, November to March is high summer, their warmest, longest golfing months, which is exactly why they belong on a winter sun list for those of us up north. Every climate and seasonal claim here was checked at the time of writing, and indicative fees are flagged as such; rates move with the peak winter season, so always confirm directly before booking. The order is our editors' view, and reasonable people will reshuffle it. If you want any of these built into a costed trip, that is exactly what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Dubai

United Arab Emirates · best November to March

The benchmark winter golf destination, where the season runs exactly opposite to ours and a string of world class courses sits within a short transfer of extraordinary hotels. The Majlis at Emirates, the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates that hosts the DP World Tour Championship, and floodlit evening golf make Dubai the most polished, reliable warm weather escape of all. Premium green fees, but premium in every sense, and unbeatable for combining golf with a luxury city break.

The Algarve

Portugal · best November to March

Europe's most established winter golf coast, a short flight from the UK with mild, sunny days through the off season and a density of quality that few places match. Monte Rei, the San Lorenzo and Quinta do Lago courses and the Vale do Lobo cliffs anchor a region built for the travelling golfer, with green fees softer in winter than at the spring peak. The easiest, most reliable winter sun option for European golfers and a perennial favourite.

The Costa del Golf, a dense stretch of southern Spanish coast where the winter stays mild and the calibre of golf is genuinely top tier. A polished, well served destination for a winter week with a fine choice of hotels, restaurants and the option of a non golf day in the hills or on the coast.
