Golf in Abu Dhabi

Why golf in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has quietly built one of the best winter golf line ups in the world, and it leads with a genuine surprise. Yas Links, the Kyle Phillips design on Yas Island, is a true seaside links of around 7,400 yards laid out along the Arabian Gulf, firm and rumpled in a way no one expects of the desert, and it has ranked as the finest course in the Middle East. Beside it sit the Gary Player ocean course at Saadiyat Beach, with holes hard against the sand, and the Peter Harradine layout at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, the long time home of the emirate's European Tour event, easily recognised by its falcon shaped clubhouse.

The pull is the package. Abu Dhabi pairs championship golf with the polish of a capital that has spent freely on culture and hospitality, from the Louvre Abu Dhabi to the Grand Mosque, the Ferrari World and Warner Bros theme parks on Yas Island and a coastline of five star beach resorts. It is calmer and more spread out than its neighbour up the road, the flights connect through one of the world's best hubs, and from November to March the weather is close to perfect. For a group that wants top tier golf wrapped in comfort and sun, it is hard to beat.

Getting there and around

Abu Dhabi International is a major hub with direct flights from Europe, Asia, Africa and North America, and the city is also an easy ninety minute drive from Dubai, so many golfers combine the two emirates on one trip. Distances within Abu Dhabi are modest but spread across islands and causeways, so a hire car or a private driver makes the daily run from hotel to course painless, and the resort courses lay on transfers. Yas Island and Saadiyat are close to the airport, while Abu Dhabi Golf Club sits nearer the city centre.

Where to stay

On Yas Island the W, the Hilton and the Radisson sit beside Yas Links and the marina, ideal for golf and the theme parks. On Saadiyat the Park Hyatt, the St Regis and the Rixos line the beach next to the Gary Player course and the Louvre, the most luxurious base in the city. For a more central stay the Corniche and the downtown hotels keep the Grand Mosque and Abu Dhabi Golf Club within reach. One planner can match the island to your golf and your group, and fold in a couple of Dubai courses if you want to play both.
