Why golf in Morocco
Morocco has been a golfing country far longer than most visitors realise. The late King Hassan II was a passionate golfer who built courses across the kingdom and founded the Hassan II Trophy, and his legacy is a collection of layouts that punch well above the country's profile. The jewel is the Red Course at Royal Dar Es Salam in Rabat, a Robert Trent Jones Sr design threaded through 440 hectares of cork oak forest, with one of the finest par 3s in the world. Around it has grown a modern golf scene centered on Marrakech, where a cluster of desert courses plays against the snow capped peaks of the High Atlas.
The appeal for a travelling golfer is simple: reliable winter sun three hours from most of Europe, green fees a fraction of the cost of Spain or Portugal, and a culture, a cuisine and a sense of adventure that few golf destinations can match. It suits the buddies group chasing value and warmth, the couple pairing golf with the souks and riads of Marrakech, and the society that wants somewhere different. Pair the rounds with a night in the desert or a trip over the Atlas and the golf becomes only part of the story.
The regions
Marrakech and the Atlas
The center of modern Moroccan golf, a cluster of desert and oasis courses against the High Atlas, paired with the souks, riads and restaurants of the red city.
Rabat and the Atlantic Coast
The capital and the coast at Casablanca and El Jadida, home to the famous Royal Dar Es Salam and the Gary Player links at Mazagan, milder in summer than the interior.
Agadir and the South
The reliable winter sun belt on the south Atlantic coast, with a run of resort courses around Agadir and Taghazout, the warmest option in the depths of winter.
The courses that matter
Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, Red
The most famous course in Morocco, a Robert Trent Jones Sr championship layout through a vast cork oak forest, with a celebrated par 3 ninth played across a lake to an island green ringed by ancient trees.
Mazagan
A Gary Player links along the dunes and valleys of the Atlantic coast near El Jadida, the longest course in Morocco, attached to a large beach resort an hour south of Casablanca.
Amelkis Golf Club
One of the original modern Marrakech courses, a Cabell Robinson design at the foot of the Atlas that follows the natural undulations and red hills of the land and hosts regular senior tour events.
Assoufid Golf Club
A striking desert course south of Marrakech, an ecological par 72 of olive trees, palms and raw sand against a clear view of the snow capped Atlas, widely rated the best conditioned course in the city.
Al Maaden Golf Resort
A Kyle Phillips design built around lakes and contemporary art on the southern edge of Marrakech, a strategic, water laced layout with the Atlas filling the horizon and a stylish resort alongside.
Fairmont Royal Palm
A lush, polished Cabell Robinson course in an olive grove and palm estate outside Marrakech, attached to a five star Fairmont resort and among the most luxurious stay and play options in the country.
Royal Golf Marrakech
The historic course of the red city, founded in the 1920s and beloved by Churchill and Eisenhower, a mature parkland of towering eucalyptus, olive and orange trees close to the medina.
PalmGolf Marrakech Palmeraie
A Robert Trent Jones Sr course in the palm groves north of the city, with water in play on most holes and the resort at its center, long a staple of Marrakech golf packages.
Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, Blue
The second eighteen at Rabat, a shorter, more open Robert Trent Jones companion to the Red through the same cork oak forest, the ideal warm up or second round on a capital leg.
Samanah Golf Club
A modern course on the road out toward the Atlas, set in a large residential and resort estate, a generous, well kept layout with mountain views and a quieter feel than the city courses.
Golf du Soleil
A long established resort complex near Agadir with multiple loops among eucalyptus and mimosa, the heart of the winter sun golf scene on the warm south Atlantic coast.
Tazegzout Golf Club
A clifftop Kyle Phillips course above the Atlantic near the surf village of Taghazout, with holes tumbling toward the ocean and one of the most dramatic settings on the Moroccan coast.

Getting there and around
Morocco is one of the easiest winter trips to reach from Europe, three to four hours by direct flight from most major cities. Marrakech is the busiest gateway and the center of the golf scene, with its courses within thirty minutes of the city, while Rabat and Casablanca serve the Atlantic coast and Royal Dar Es Salam, and Agadir is the arrival point for the south. Within each city a private driver is the easy way to move between courses and hotels, inexpensive by European standards and far simpler than driving yourself, and the same driver can handle the run to the Atlas or the desert when the golf is done.
Where to stay
In Marrakech the choice runs from a traditional riad in the medina to a five star resort beside its own course, and many groups split the trip between the two for the full experience. The Fairmont Royal Palm and the resorts at Amelkis and Al Maaden put golf on the doorstep, while a riad near the Jemaa el Fnaa keeps the souks and restaurants close. In Rabat a city hotel pairs the capital with Royal Dar Es Salam, and on the south coast the resorts of Agadir and Taghazout anchor a winter sun trip. Book the marquee resorts ahead for the peak winter weeks.
