Why golf in Vietnam

Vietnam has become one of the great golf stories of the last decade. A country with barely a handful of courses at the turn of the century now holds four layouts in the world top 100, most of them strung along the central coast around Da Nang. The biggest names in design have all built here: Greg Norman shaped The Bluffs from the dunes at Ho Tram, Luke Donald laid out the record breaking length of Ba Na Hills, Nick Faldo built Laguna Lang Co, and Robert Trent Jones II made his Vietnam debut at Hoiana Shores. The standard is genuinely world class, and the prices undercut almost anywhere comparable.

For a travelling golfer the appeal is the package. Caddies are included on almost every round, the courses are immaculate and dramatic, and the golf sits beside some of the best beaches, food and culture in Asia, from the lantern lit streets of Hoi An to the war history and street food of Ho Chi Minh City. A week on the Da Nang coast can take in five marquee courses without a long transfer, with the option to add the southern dunes or the northern courses near Hanoi for a grander tour.

Getting there and around

Da Nang is the natural gateway for a Vietnamese golf trip, a modern international airport in the middle of the country with the densest cluster of great courses within thirty to forty five minutes, and Hoi An a short drive south. For the southern dunes, fly into Ho Chi Minh City for The Bluffs at Ho Tram, about two hours by road, or into Cam Ranh for KN Golf Links near Nha Trang. Hanoi serves the northern courses and Halong Bay. Domestic flights between the hubs are cheap and frequent, and a private driver makes the transfers between courses, hotels and the sights effortless.

Where to stay

On the central coast, the beach resorts of Da Nang and the boutique hotels of Hoi An put you among the marquee courses, with luxury resorts on the doorstep of Laguna Lang Co and Hoiana. In the south, the Ho Tram strip wraps the golf into a beach resort an easy run from Ho Chi Minh City, while Cam Ranh serves Nha Trang. In the north, a Hanoi city hotel pairs the golf with the old quarter and a Halong Bay cruise. Book the dry season weeks ahead and let one planner line up the right base and the caddies for each leg.
