Why golf in the Algarve

The Algarve is the most complete golf coast in continental Europe, and for many travelling golfers it is the default European break. Southern Portugal packs more than 40 courses into roughly 100 miles of Atlantic coastline, with a climate that delivers golf in every month of the year and a tourism machine built around the game. Faro airport sits in the middle of it all, the resorts are walkable and well run, and the value, outside the flagship few, is some of the best in Europe. You come here for volume and reliability rather than the raw drama of a links coast, and you leave having played four or five very good courses without a single weather day lost.

The heart of it is the Golden Triangle, the cluster of Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura just west of Faro, where the best resort golf and the smartest hotels sit within a few minutes of one another. Monte Rei, a Jack Nicklaus Signature course rated the best in Portugal, anchors the quieter east, while Palmares, Boavista and the Penina courses spread the golf west toward Lagos. Add San Lorenzo, a perennial top five course in the country, and you have a destination that suits a first golf trip and a tenth in equal measure.

How to think about an Algarve golf trip

The Golden Triangle

Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura, the dense, polished core just west of Faro, with the best resort courses, the smartest hotels and the shortest drives between rounds.

The east

Quieter and more exclusive, built around Monte Rei, the Jack Nicklaus course rated number one in Portugal, with Castro Marim and the Spanish border within reach for a day trip.

The west

Around Lagos and Portimao, where Palmares, Boavista, Espiche and the historic Penina courses offer ocean views, lower prices and a calmer, less manicured feel.

The courses that matter

Monte Rei North

Jack Nicklaus, 2007 · Par 72

The Jack Nicklaus Signature course in the eastern Algarve, consistently rated the best in Portugal. Water threatens roughly eleven of the eighteen holes across an immaculate, low density layout where one buggy per pair and a single tee time culture keep the round unhurried. The most exclusive golf in the region and the one course visitors plan a trip around.

Quinta do Lago South

William Mitchell, 1974 · Par 72

The original Quinta do Lago championship course and a long time host of the Portuguese Open, a mature, umbrella pine parkland with generous fairways and a famous run home over water. Polished, strategic and the centrepiece of one of the Algarve's best addresses, alongside the redesigned North and the newer Laranjal course nearby.

Vale do Lobo Royal

Henry Cotton · Rocky Roquemore · Par 72

Home to one of the most photographed holes in Europe, the par 3 16th, which carries three ravines along the red sandstone cliffs above the Atlantic. The Royal is the tougher of the resort's two courses, the Ocean its more forgiving sibling, and the clifftop setting makes either an easy sell for a group that wants the postcard shot.

Vilamoura Old Course

Frank Pennink, 1969 · Par 73

The grand old man of Vilamoura, a classic Frank Pennink parkland that winds through avenues of umbrella pine and is widely held to be the most characterful course in the resort. The Old anchors a four course estate that also includes the Dom Pedro Victoria, an Arnold Palmer design and host of past Portugal Masters, for an easy multi round base.

San Lorenzo

Joseph Lee · Par 72

A perennial top five course in Portugal, set on the Ria Formosa nature reserve beside Quinta do Lago with saltwater lagoon and ocean views on the closing stretch. Access has traditionally been reserved largely for guests of the associated hotels, which keeps it quiet and adds to the sense of occasion.

Palmares and the west

Lagos and Portimao · Par 71 to 72

Palmares, above the Lagos bay, mixes genuine seaside holes with hillier inland ground for some of the best ocean views in the region. Nearby Boavista, Espiche and the two Penina courses, the latter a Sir Henry Cotton design from the 1960s on the flat near Portimao, round out a quieter, better value western circuit.

Getting there and around

Faro airport sits in the centre of the coast and takes direct flights from across the United Kingdom, Ireland and northern Europe, with most of the golf within a 45 minute drive. The Golden Triangle courses around Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura are barely twenty minutes from the terminal, while Monte Rei in the east and the Lagos courses in the west are closer to an hour. A hire car is the sensible choice for a golf trip, as it lets you mix resorts and reach the quieter ends of the coast, though the A22 toll motorway makes the long runs quick. Transfers and golf buggies cover the resorts themselves comfortably between rounds.

Where to stay

For convenience and the best concentration of golf, base in the Golden Triangle, where Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura each offer resort hotels, villas and apartments within minutes of the first tee. Vilamoura suits groups who want a marina, restaurants and a livelier evening; Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo are quieter and more upmarket. For a more exclusive, low key trip, the east around Monte Rei rewards a villa stay, while the west around Lagos pairs golf with a more authentic Portuguese town. Pick one base and spoke out, or split the week east and west to see the whole coast.
