Why golf on the Costa del Sol

No coast in Europe packs in golf like this one. The strip of southern Spain from Sotogrande through Marbella to Malaga is known as the Costa del Golf for a simple reason: more than seventy courses sit within an easy drive of one another, served by a single airport at Malaga and roughly 320 days of sunshine a year. You can play a different course every day for a fortnight without repeating yourself, and the weather will almost always cooperate, which is why northern Europeans have wintered here with their clubs for half a century.

The quality runs deep as well as wide. Real Club Valderrama, the 1997 Ryder Cup venue and Spain's number one course, anchors the Sotogrande estate alongside Robert Trent Jones senior's original 1964 masterpiece and the modern grandeur of La Reserva. West toward Casares sits Finca Cortesin, the polished 2006 Cabell Robinson layout that hosted the 2023 Solheim Cup. In between, the Marbella Golf Valley of Nueva Andalucia stacks Las Brisas, Los Naranjos and Aloha within a few minutes of each other. Add the big resorts at La Cala and Mijas and you have a destination that suits a marquee buddies trip, a society week or a couples break in equal measure.

Getting there and around

Malaga airport is the gateway and one of the best connected in southern Europe, with direct flights from across the continent and a fast motorway running the length of the coast. From the terminal it is around forty five minutes to Marbella and the Golf Valley, and a little over an hour to Sotogrande and Valderrama at the western end. Gibraltar airport sits even closer to Sotogrande for those who can use it. A hire car is the natural choice here, since the courses spread along the coast and the motorway makes hopping between them simple, though a private driver is an easy upgrade for a group that wants to enjoy the long Andalucian lunches.

Where to stay

Match the base to the trip. Marbella and Puerto Banus put you in the middle of the Golf Valley with the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and nightlife, ideal for a group that wants the courses and the buzz together. Sotogrande is quieter and more exclusive, the right base for a Valderrama and Sotogrande focused week. For groups who want everything in one place, the resort hotels at La Cala and Finca Cortesin keep the golf, rooms and dining on the property. Book the marquee resorts and the spring and autumn weeks well ahead, and let one planner line up the right base for each leg.
