Royal Golf Marrakech
Royal Golf Marrakech is the historic course of the red city, laid out in the 1920s at the request of the Pasha and one of the oldest courses in Morocco. Reworked in 1933 by the Open champion Arnaud Massy with Gustave Golias and later extended to twenty seven holes, the classic eighteen is a mature par 72 of about 6,475 yards lined with olives, palms and orange trees, the Atlas Mountains on the horizon.

The verdict
Royal Golf Marrakech was created in the 1920s at the request of the Pasha of Marrakech and inaugurated in 1927, making it the second oldest course in Morocco. In 1933 the great Arnaud Massy, the first golfer from outside Britain and Ireland to win the Open, remodelled it with Gustave Golias, and a nine hole loop was added in 2007 to bring it to twenty seven holes. Generations of royalty and visitors have played beneath its towering palms.
The appeal is its maturity and its setting. Decades of growth have given the parkland a density of olives, palms, cypress and orange trees that newer Marrakech courses cannot match, and the snow capped Atlas Mountains stand on the southern horizon. It is not the longest or most modern course in the city, but for history, atmosphere and shade in the heat it remains a favourite of travelling golfers.

The holes worth the trip
Royal Golf Marrakech rewards placement over power. The fairways thread between mature stands of palm and olive, so the line off the tee matters more than the distance, and overhanging branches punish the wayward. The greens are classic and modestly sized, asking for a controlled, accurate approach rather than a bold one.
Water and the old irrigation channels come into play on several holes, and the shade of the trees is a welcome ally in the Marrakech heat. The course favours the thinking golfer and the good iron player, and the twenty seven hole layout lets you mix the historic loops with the newer Menara nine. A fore caddie has been required since 2025, in keeping with the club tradition.
The closing holes return through the oldest part of the parkland with the Atlas Mountains framing the southern sky. It is a gentle, atmospheric finish rather than a dramatic one, in keeping with a course whose pleasures are history and setting more than length. For a morning round before exploring the medina, Royal Golf Marrakech is the classic Marrakech choice.

Where to stay nearby
Most golfers stay in central Marrakech, in a riad in the medina or one of the resort hotels in the Palmeraie and Hivernage districts, all a short drive from the course. The city combines the golf with the souks, the gardens and the food, and Royal Golf Marrakech is the most historic of several courses within easy reach.
Marrakech pairs naturally with Agadir on the Atlantic coast for a two centre Moroccan golf trip, the historic city parkland against the modern links and ocean courses of the south. With more time, the courses around Rabat add the Royal Dar Es Salaam, the country's most celebrated layout.
