Samanah Country Club
Nicklaus Design laid out Samanah in 2008 on a 300 hectare estate fifteen minutes from Marrakech, a par 72 of about 7,320 yards from the tips that runs toward one of the finest views of the snow capped Atlas Mountains in Moroccan golf.

The verdict
Nicklaus Design built Samanah Country Club in 2008 across a 300 hectare estate on the road out of Marrakech, and the result is one of the most polished resort layouts in Morocco. It is a par 72 measuring close to 7,320 yards from the championship tees, framed throughout by date palms, olive groves and the snow dusted peaks of the Atlas Mountains rising to the south.
Our verdict: this is destination golf built for the travelling player rather than the championship purist. The fairways are wide and welcoming, the conditioning is reliably good through the cool season, and the mountain backdrop gives almost every hole a sense of occasion. Pair it with the older Marrakech courses for a week of warm weather golf, and play it early when the light is on the Atlas.

The holes worth the trip
Samanah plays across gently rolling ground, the Nicklaus team using broad fairways and large, well guarded greens to give resort golfers room off the tee while still asking for thought on the approach. Water and desert scrub come into play on several holes, and the prevailing breeze off the plain can stiffen the back nine in the afternoon.
The short par 4 sixth is the hole players remember, a tempting, drivable two shotter that dangles a birdie in front of the bold and punishes the greedy with sand and run off areas around a small green. It is the kind of strategic half par hole that defines the better Nicklaus resort designs.
Throughout the round the Atlas Mountains sit on the horizon, and the closing stretch turns back toward the clubhouse with the peaks square ahead. Samanah rewards the player who keeps the ball below the hole and respects the wind, and it gives back a relaxed, scenic round that suits a mixed ability group.
