Mazagan Golf Course

Gary Player's Atlantic links at El Jadida, opened in 2009 and one of the longest and most exposed courses in Morocco. Player ran the layout through the dunes alongside the ocean, a true links test where the wind is the architect, set within a sprawling beach resort an hour south of Casablanca.

The verdict

Mazagan opened in 2009 to a design by Gary Player, who drew on a lifetime of links golf to lay out a par 72 that stretches beyond 7,400 yards through the dunes alongside the Atlantic at El Jadida. It is one of the longest courses in Morocco, and the genuine links character, firm ground, tumbling fairways and an ever present sea wind, sets it apart from the parkland resort courses around Marrakech and Rabat. For the travelling golfer it is the country's best taste of seaside golf.

Player, a three time Open champion on links turf, has built a course that rewards the low, controlled flight and punishes the high, loose shot the wind can seize. Wide fairways give the everyday golfer room, but the length and the breeze make it a stern examination from the back tees. Wrapped in a large beach resort with a hotel, spa and casino, it is an easy, comfortable base for a few days of links golf on the Moroccan coast.

The holes worth the trip

The links runs out along the dunes beside the Atlantic, the fairways tumbling over natural ground and the wind setting the test from the opening drive. On a breezy day the course bares its teeth and the low runner becomes the only sensible shot.

Length is the headline. From the back tees this is a brute, one of the longest cards in the country, with par 5s that stretch out of reach and long par 4s into the prevailing wind. Player gives the shorter hitter forward tees and width, so the test scales to the player, but the championship setup is a serious one.

The closing holes turn back along the coast toward the resort, finishing in sight of the hotel and the beach. It is a fitting end to a round that, unusually for Morocco, feels far closer to a British or Irish links than to a manicured desert course.

Where to stay nearby

The natural base is the Mazagan Beach and Golf Resort that surrounds the course, a large property with a hotel, spa, casino, beach and several restaurants, where golf and stay packages make a few days of links golf simple to arrange.

El Jadida itself, with its Portuguese fortified old town, is worth a wander, and the resort sits within easy reach of Casablanca for a city night or onward travel. For a links flavoured break on the Atlantic, Mazagan is the obvious Moroccan choice.
