The Best Golf Courses in the Western Algarve

The western Algarve, from Portimao out to Lagos and the wild Sagres coast, is the quieter, more dramatic end of Portugal's golf coast. It holds the course that started it all, Henry Cotton's Penina, the most scenic round in the region at Palmares on the Bay of Lagos, a string of clifftop and eco courses, and prices and crowds that ease the further west you drive. Here are the seven rounds we would build a western Algarve week around, ranked.

How we chose them

We rank on the quality and character of the golf first, then on what each course adds to a traveling golfer's week: variety against the others on this list, the welcome, and what the green fee buys. The western Algarve is a different proposition from the busy central triangle around Vilamoura: fewer courses, more coastline, more drama, and a calmer pace built around Lagos, Portimao and the surf towns of the far west. It suits the golfer who wants memorable, scenic rounds wrapped around a beautiful stretch of coast rather than a course every five minutes. Where we quote a fee it is the club's published or operator listed 2026 rate, marked indicative; winter is the high season, so always confirm directly before booking.

The ranking

01

Onyria Palmares Golf

Frank Pennink 1975, remastered by Robert Trent Jones Jr 2010 · Lagos · 27 holes · indicative 90 to 140 euro

The most beautiful golf in the western Algarve, and our number one. Frank Pennink laid out the original Palmares above the Bay of Lagos in 1975, and Robert Trent Jones Jr remastered it in 2010 into 27 holes across the Alvor, Lagos and Praia nines, several of which tumble right down to the sand with the ocean, the estuary and the Monchique mountains filling the view. The seaside holes are genuinely links like, the higher holes give the long panoramas, and the Onyria resort attached to it is among the best places to stay in the region. Indicative 2026 fees run around 90 to 140 euro. The round you build the trip around.

02

Penina Championship Course

Sir Henry Cotton, 1966 · Portimao · par 73 · the original Algarve course · indicative 90 to 150 euro

The historic number two, and the course that created Algarve golf. Three time Open champion Sir Henry Cotton routed Penina across flat former rice paddies near Portimao in 1966, planting the hundreds of thousands of trees that now line every fairway and turned reclaimed marsh into a stately, mature championship parkland. It was the first course in the region, it has hosted the Portuguese Open many times, and Cotton's old home is now part of the resort hotel beside the first tee. At par 73 it is a long, classic, strategic test that rewards the straight hitter. Indicative 2026 fees run around 90 to 150 euro.

03

Espiche Golf

Peter Sauerman, 2012 · Lagos · par 72, 5,862 m · indicative 75 to 115 euro

The modern eco round, and the connoisseur's pick. Peter Sauerman designed Espiche near Lagos in 2012 to a deliberately environmental brief, set in a quiet, undeveloped valley where native vegetation, lakes and rough are left to do the defending and the clubhouse terrace looks out over the whole course. It plays firm and natural, more like a heathland than a manicured resort course, a thinking golfer's layout that long time Algarve visitors single out as a favourite. The atmosphere is relaxed and the welcome warm. Indicative 2026 fees run around 75 to 115 euro, excellent value for the quality.

04

Boavista Golf

Howard Swan, 2002 · Lagos · par 71, 6,053 m · indicative 70 to 110 euro

The resort all rounder above Lagos. Howard Swan opened Boavista in 2002 on undulating ground east of Lagos, a par 71 parkland with glimpses of the ocean, a memorable downhill par 3 toward the sea and a full resort of villas, spa and restaurants around it. It is not the examination Palmares or Penina are, but it is varied, well conditioned and friendly, with the kind of views and facilities that make it a comfortable base for a mixed group. Close to town and the beach, it is the natural everyday round of a Lagos trip. Indicative 2026 fees run around 70 to 110 euro.

05

Alto Golf

Sir Henry Cotton's final design · Alvor · par 72 · indicative 70 to 110 euro

Cotton's last course, and a clifftop signature. Alto, above Alvor between Portimao and the sea, was the final design of Sir Henry Cotton, and it saves its drama for the closing stretch where one of the longest par 3s in Europe plays out toward the clifftops with the Atlantic beyond. The rest is a pleasant, rolling resort parkland with ocean views from the high ground, but it is that spectacular finish, and the link to Cotton's legacy, that earns it a place. It pairs naturally with Penina down the road. Indicative 2026 fees run around 70 to 110 euro.

06

Morgado Golf

European Golf Design era · Portimao · par 73 · indicative 60 to 95 euro

The big, modern championship round inland from Portimao. Morgado is a long, wide, American style par 73 laid across rolling countryside in the Serra de Monchique foothills, with generous fairways, big greens and a scale that suits the player who likes to let the driver go. It has hosted European Tour qualifying and stages of the developmental tours, and its sister course Alamos sits next door for a 36 hole day. Set back from the coast, it is quieter and better value than the seaside names. Indicative 2026 fees run around 60 to 95 euro, often the best price on the western card.

07

Santo Antonio (Parque da Floresta)

Far western Algarve · Budens, near Salema · par 71 · confirm fees directly

The wild west round, out toward Sagres. Santo Antonio, long known as Parque da Floresta, sits in the hills above Budens near Salema, the most westerly course in the Algarve and the most dramatically sited, tumbling through steep valleys with sea views, vineyards and almond groves and a couple of memorably vertiginous holes. It is short, quirky and hilly rather than a championship test, but the setting in the unspoilt far west, near the surf beaches and the end of the continent at Cape St Vincent, is unlike anything else in the region. Rates move with season and packages, so confirm directly before booking.

Building the trip

Base around Lagos and play west to east. Lagos puts Palmares, Espiche and Boavista within fifteen minutes, three varied rounds including the best scenery in the region, and the old town's restaurants and marina make it the best evening base on this coast. Penina, Alto and Morgado cluster around Portimao, twenty to thirty minutes east, an easy second day or a stop on the way in from Faro. Save Santo Antonio for the adventure day, combining it with the drive out to Cape St Vincent and the Sagres surf beaches. The whole western card is playable from one base without a long transfer. Indicative 2026 fees run around 90 to 140 euro depending on season. Always confirm directly before booking.

How much do green fees cost in the western Algarve in 2026?

Roughly 70 to 150 euro depending on course and season. Palmares and Penina are the premium rounds at an indicative 90 to 150 euro; Espiche, Boavista, Alto and Morgado sit around 70 to 120 euro. Winter is the high season in the Algarve. All fees are indicative for 2026; always confirm directly before booking.

Which is the original Algarve golf course?

Penina, near Portimao, opened in 1966 to a design by the three time Open champion Sir Henry Cotton, who laid it out across former rice paddies and planted the avenues of trees that define it today. It was the first course in the Algarve and remains a flat, classic, tree lined championship test, with Cotton's old home now part of the resort hotel.

When is the best time to play golf in the western Algarve?

The Algarve plays year round, and winter is the high season, when northern Europe books out the tee sheets and rates peak from roughly November to April. Spring and autumn give warm, dry, less crowded golf and are the sweet spot. Summer is hot but tempered on the coast by the Atlantic breeze, and it is the value window with fees lower than the winter peak.
