The Silver Coast is Portugal's Atlantic answer to the Algarve, the stretch of cliff and dune an hour north of Lisbon around Obidos and Peniche. It holds some of the best modern golf in Iberia at a fraction of the southern fees: Cynthia Dye's wild West Cliffs, the resort links of Praia D'El Rey, and a late Seve Ballesteros design at Royal Obidos. How we chose them

The Silver Coast built its golf reputation in two waves. Praia D'El Rey arrived in 1997 and proved that world class seaside golf could live an hour north of Lisbon; twenty years later West Cliffs opened next door and went straight into the European top tier. Around them sit a late Ballesteros design at Royal Obidos, Donald Steel's lagoonside Bom Sucesso and the quiet inland estate of Golden Eagle. The Atlantic wind is the constant, the crowds are thinner than the Algarve and the value is the best on Portugal's coast.

Every fact here, from designers and dates to access, was checked at the time of writing, and green fees on the Silver Coast remain markedly below comparable Algarve marquees across the 2026 season. West Cliffs Golf Links

Cynthia Dye, opened 2017 · Obidos · resort, visitors welcome

The headline act of the Silver Coast and one of the best modern courses in continental Europe. Cynthia Dye routed it through wild coastal scrub and dunes above the Atlantic, it was named the World's Best New Golf Course at the 2017 World Golf Awards, and it has lived inside the European top 30 rankings since. Every hole feels carved rather than built, the ocean views run the length of the property, and the green fee remains startling value next to anything comparable in Iberia.

Praia D'El Rey

Cabell B. Robinson, opened 1997 · Obidos · resort, visitors welcome

The course that put the Silver Coast on the map, a Cabell Robinson design that opens through umbrella pines and then bursts onto open duneland with some of the most photographed seaside holes in Portugal. The Marriott resort behind it makes the natural base for the region, with West Cliffs sharing the same destination, and the back nine along the beach still holds its own against anything that has arrived since.

Royal Obidos

Severiano Ballesteros, opened 2012 · Obidos · resort, visitors welcome

A late Severiano Ballesteros design and one of the last courses to carry his hand, opened in 2012 on rolling ground with long views to the Atlantic and the Obidos lagoon. It stretches to 6,765 meters from the championship tees yet plays fairly forward, with big greens, generous corridors and a Seve flourish in the risk and reward holes. The Evolutee hotel on site makes it an easy stay and play.

Guardian Bom Sucesso

A Donald Steel design from 2008, shaped with Tom Mackenzie and Martin Ebert, laid out beside the Obidos lagoon in a resort of striking modern architecture. The course mixes open lagoonside holes with tighter passages through pine, the wind off the water sets the daily examination, and it completes a four course cluster around Obidos that needs no transfers longer than twenty minutes.

The connoisseur's detour, a Rocky Roquemore design on a quiet inland estate toward Rio Maior, framed by cork oaks and water with a private club calm that the coastal resorts cannot offer. It rewards the drive with immaculate conditioning and a relaxed welcome, and it makes the ideal change of pace day on a Silver Coast week when the Atlantic wind is up.
