The Best Golf Courses in the Algarve

The Algarve is mainland Europe’s most complete golf coast, a ninety minute strip of umbrella pines, red cliffs and Atlantic light packed with championship courses and winter sun. Here are the ten we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

No region in continental Europe offers as many good courses in as small a space as the Algarve, so a top ten here is genuinely competitive and a fine course can miss the cut. We weighed design quality, conditioning, the strength of the routing and the pleasure of the round, and we leaned toward courses a visiting golfer can actually book, which in the Algarve is nearly all of them. The clear number one is Monte Rei in the quiet east, a Jack Nicklaus signature course kept in immaculate order and run with a precision that sets it apart from the rest of the coast.

Below it sits the famous golden triangle around Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, where William Mitchell, Henry Cotton and Joseph Lee shaped some of the best loved holes in European resort golf, and the mature, tree lined courses of Vilamoura. Every fact here, from designer to opening year, was checked at the time of writing, and where a date could not be confirmed we have said so rather than guess. Green fees move with the season, so treat any figure as indicative and confirm directly before booking. The verdicts are ours; the order reflects our editors’ view.

The ranking

01

Monte Rei, North Course

Jack Nicklaus, 2007 · eastern Algarve

The finest course in Portugal and one of the best in Europe, a Jack Nicklaus signature design opened in 2007 on rolling ground in the quiet eastern Algarve, framed by the Serra do Caldeirao hills. Faultless conditioning, generous corridors and a buggy with a personal cool box of refreshments set the tone. Exclusive and pricey, but the closest the Algarve comes to perfection.

02

Quinta do Lago, South Course

William Mitchell, 1974 · Quinta do Lago

The grande dame of the golden triangle, laid out by the American architect William Mitchell and a long time Portuguese Open host, running through umbrella pines and around lakes. The famous par 3 over water at the fifteenth is one of the Algarve’s signature holes. Polished, mature and constantly refreshed, it remains the benchmark resort course of the central coast.

03

San Lorenzo

Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore, 1988 · Ria Formosa

For many the most beautiful round in the Algarve, designed by Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore in 1988 along the edge of the Ria Formosa nature reserve. The sixth and seventh, played beside the salt marsh and lagoon, are as good as resort holes get in Europe. Access is tied to staying in the right hotel, which keeps it quiet and adds to the sense of occasion.

04

Vale do Lobo, Royal Course

Sir Henry Cotton, revised Rocky Roquemore · Vale do Lobo

Home to the most photographed hole in the Algarve, the clifftop par 3 sixteenth that carries three ravines along the red cliffs above the beach. Originally shaped by Sir Henry Cotton and later revised by Rocky Roquemore, the Royal is the showpiece of a busy resort and a bucket list tee shot for any visiting golfer. Book it for the drama as much as the architecture.

05

Vilamoura Old Course

Frank Pennink, 1969 · Vilamoura

The course that started Algarve golf, opened by Frank Pennink in 1969 and still the most traditional round on the coast, a classic tree lined layout winding through tall umbrella pines. Now part of the Dom Pedro stable, it favours position and shot shaping over power and rewards a thinking game. A handsome, old school test and a piece of the region’s history.

06

Palmares

Robert Trent Jones Jr redesign, 2011 · Lagos, western Algarve

The pick of the western Algarve, rebuilt by Robert Trent Jones Junior around 2011 above the sweeping bay of Lagos, with several holes that run down toward the sand in true links fashion. Big sea views, real elevation change and a links and parkland mix make it the most varied round on the coast. The reason to base a trip in the quieter, more scenic west.

07

Penina, Championship Course

Sir Henry Cotton, 1966 · Portimao

Sir Henry Cotton’s masterpiece and his adopted home course, carved in 1966 out of flat former rice paddies that he drained and planted with the thousands of trees that now define it. Long, level and stately, it is a period championship test and a slice of Algarve golf heritage. Less dramatic than the cliff courses, but a must for students of the game.

08

Dom Pedro Victoria

Arnold Palmer, 2004 · Vilamoura

The Algarve’s big tournament course, an Arnold Palmer design opened in 2004 and the long time host of the Portugal Masters on the DP World Tour. Wide fairways, vast greens and water in play on the closing holes make it a proper modern championship layout that visitors can play and pretend, briefly, to be a tour pro. The most televised course on the coast.

09

Pinheiros Altos

Ronald Fream and others · Quinta do Lago

A quietly excellent twenty seven hole club inside the Quinta do Lago estate, threading pine forest and lakes with the same materials as its more famous neighbours but a fraction of the fuss. The variety of three loops keeps it interesting and the conditioning is consistently high. An underrated option that rounds out a golden triangle itinerary nicely.

10

Amendoeira, Faldo Course

Sir Nick Faldo · Alcantarilha, central Algarve

A modern, rugged contrast to the lush resort courses, designed by Sir Nick Faldo across rocky, desert toned hills inland from the coast near Alcantarilha. Cacti, sandy waste and bold contouring give it a look unlike anything else in the Algarve and a serious test from the back tees. Paired with its O’Connor sibling, it makes a strong day for keener golfers.

Algarve golf questions

What is the best golf course in the Algarve?

Monte Rei North, a Jack Nicklaus signature course in the quiet eastern Algarve, is the clear number one and the highest rated course in Portugal. Quinta do Lago South and San Lorenzo in the central golden triangle are the best of the resort courses just behind it.

When is the best time to play golf in the Algarve?

The Algarve plays all year, but spring, roughly February to May, and autumn, September to November, give the best mix of warm days, firm turf and value. High summer is hot for golf, and midwinter is mild but cooler and busier with northern Europeans escaping the cold.

Where should I base a golf trip in the Algarve?

The central golden triangle around Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo puts the most courses within a short drive and is the usual choice. Base in the east for Monte Rei and a quieter stay, or around Lagos in the west for Palmares and the prettier coastline.

How much does golf cost in the Algarve?

Indicative high season green fees in 2026 run from around 90 euros at the mid tier courses to 250 euros or more at Monte Rei, with twilight and multi round packages reducing the cost. Fees move with the season and the time of day, so always confirm directly before booking.
