The Best Shoulder Season Golf in the Mediterranean

The shoulder seasons, spring and autumn, are the smartest time to play the Mediterranean: firm turf, mild days and lighter crowds, with the summer heat and the winter rains both out of the way. These are the nine destinations we send travelling golfers to either side of the peak, ranked, with the courses to build around and the exact months that work.

Why shoulder season, and how we chose

The Mediterranean has two quiet superpowers for the travelling golfer, and both fall outside high summer. In spring, from April into June, the winter rains have cleared, the turf has firmed and the courses are at their freshest. In autumn, from September into November, the fierce summer heat breaks while the sea keeps the air warm into the evening. These are the windows when you get the best conditions, the lightest crowds and, in many destinations, better value than the peak. Midsummer in southern Spain, Turkey, Greece or the Italian islands can be punishingly hot; the shoulder months hand you the same courses in far kinder weather.

We ranked these nine destinations on the quality and depth of their golf, how reliably the shoulder months deliver good playing weather, ease of access and transfers, and the strength of the wider trip around the golf. The order reflects where we would send a group first, but every destination here is a genuinely good shoulder season choice. Designers, courses and resort detail were verified in June 2026 against recognized golf travel sources; seasonal timing is editorial guidance, because conditions vary year to year, so always confirm the picture for your dates before booking.

The Algarve, Portugal

Monte Rei, Quinta do Lago, San Lorenzo · best Mar to May and late Sep to Nov

The Algarve is the Mediterranean golfer's safe pair of hands in the shoulder months. Spring and the long autumn deliver warm, settled days, firm fairways and the deep roster that makes the region famous: the Jack Nicklaus signature Monte Rei, the lakeside Quinta do Lago courses, the umbrella pine drama of San Lorenzo and the value of the Vilamoura layouts. Winter is the Algarve's true peak, so the shoulder windows trade a little of that certainty for thinner crowds and the freshest turf of the year.

Sotogrande and the Costa del Sol, Spain

Valderrama, Real Club Sotogrande, Finca Cortesin · best Apr to Jun and Sep to Oct

Andalusia in spring and early autumn is golf at its most polished. This is Valderrama country, the Robert Trent Jones masterpiece that hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup, alongside Real Club Sotogrande and the immaculate Finca Cortesin. The cork oak parkland of Sotogrande peaks in conditioning when the summer heat lifts, while the wider Costa del Sol strings together dozens of courses within an easy drive, making this the Mediterranean's most complete shoulder season base for a serious group.

Costa Navarino, Messinia, Greece

The Dunes, The Bay, two new layouts · best Apr to Jun and Sep to Oct

Greece arrived as a golf destination at Costa Navarino, and the shoulder months are its sweet spot, before the high summer heat and after it breaks. The Dunes, a Bernhard Langer design with European Golf Design, opened in 2010 as the country's first signature course, joined by the Robert Trent Jones II Bay course and a pair of newer layouts up in the hills. Messinia in April, May, September and October is warm, green and uncrowded, a destination still ahead of the curve.

Belek, Turkey

Montgomerie Maxx Royal, Carya, Cornelia · best Mar to May and Oct to Nov

Belek is built for shoulder season golf. The pine forest resort strip on Turkey's Mediterranean coast bakes in midsummer, so spring and autumn are when its courses show best: the Colin Montgomerie designed Maxx Royal, the floodlit P.B. Dye layout at Carya and the Nick Faldo holes at Cornelia. Add all inclusive resort value and short transfers from Antalya, and Belek is the value heavyweight of the Mediterranean shoulder calendar for buddies and society trips.

Sicily, Italy

Verdura East and West · best Apr to Jun and Sep to Oct

Verdura is the reason Sicily belongs on this list. Kyle Phillips routed two courses along nearly two kilometres of the island's southern coast, links in feel and framed by the sea, and the resort behind them is among the finest in the Mediterranean. Spring and early autumn bring warm days and firm turf without the fierce heat of a Sicilian summer, and the island's food, wine and history make Verdura a couples and special occasion destination as much as a golf one.

Mallorca, Spain

Alcanada, Son Gual, Son Muntaner · best Apr to Jun and Sep to Oct

Mallorca packs a remarkable spread of golf into a short transfer from northern Europe, and it shines in the shoulder months. Alcanada, a Robert Trent Jones II design, runs down to a lighthouse on the bay and is the island's signature, supported by the manicured Son Gual and the resort golf around Son Muntaner. Mild spring and autumn weather, easy access and a strong food and lodging scene make Mallorca an effortless long weekend for couples and small groups.

Sardinia, Italy

Pevero, Is Molas · best May to Jun and Sep to Oct

Sardinia is the quieter, more glamorous Italian option. Pevero, a Robert Trent Jones design threading through granite and maquis on the Costa Smeralda, is one of the Mediterranean's most scenic courses, with Is Molas anchoring the south of the island. The Costa Smeralda is at its best either side of the summer crush, when the weather is warm, the resorts are calmer and the golf comes with some of the most beautiful coastline in the sea.

Cyprus

Aphrodite Hills, Elea · best Apr to May and Oct to Nov

Cyprus stretches the shoulder season longer than most, with reliable warmth deep into autumn and early in spring. Aphrodite Hills, a Cabell Robinson layout set in a resort above the coast near Paphos, is the island's most complete golf base, joined by the Jack Nicklaus designed Elea. The combination of dependable weather, full resort facilities and short transfers makes Cyprus a dependable choice when the rest of Europe is cooling off.

The French Riviera, France

Terre Blanche · best Apr to Jun and Sep to Oct

The Cote d'Azur hinterland turns golf into a lifestyle break. Terre Blanche, with two Dave Thomas courses above the Provencal village of Tourrettes, is the standout, a polished resort within easy reach of the coast and the perched villages of the backcountry. Spring and early autumn bring warm, clear days and the region's famous light without the August traffic, making the Riviera a refined shoulder season choice for couples and golfers who want more than golf.

Mediterranean shoulder season questions

When is shoulder season golf in the Mediterranean?

Shoulder season in the Mediterranean broadly means spring, from around April into June, and autumn, from September into November, the windows either side of the hot, busy summer peak. The exact sweet spot shifts by latitude: Greece, Turkey and Cyprus hold warmth later into autumn and earlier in spring, while Portugal and southern Spain are excellent across both windows. These months bring firm turf, mild temperatures and lighter crowds. Always confirm seasonal conditions and rates directly before booking.

Which Mediterranean destination is best in spring?

For spring, Sotogrande and the Costa del Sol in southern Spain and the Algarve in Portugal are hard to beat, with warm, settled weather and courses in peak condition as the winter rains clear. Greece at Costa Navarino and Sicily at Verdura also come alive from April. The best choice depends on your group and budget, from the value of Belek to the polish of Sotogrande, so use the ranked list above as your starting point.

Is golf cheaper in the Mediterranean in shoulder season?

Often, yes, though it depends on the destination. In places where winter is the high season, such as the Algarve, the spring and autumn shoulders can offer better value and fewer crowds. In summer peak destinations like Belek, Greece and the Italian islands, the shoulder months are both cheaper and far more pleasant to play than the hot core of summer. Green fees and packages are seasonal and indicative, so always confirm current rates directly before booking.

What is the weather like for Mediterranean shoulder season golf?

Expect warm, comfortable golfing weather: daytime temperatures that are pleasant rather than fierce, firmer fairways than the wet winter, and a lower chance of the extreme heat that makes a midsummer round hard work. Spring can bring the occasional shower as winter clears, and late autumn cools in the evenings, but the playing conditions across the region in these windows are among the best of the year.
