Best Shoulder Season Golf Value

The smartest golf money you will spend is in the shoulder weeks, the stretch just before and after a destination's peak, when the weather still holds but fees, flights and crowds fall away. These are the eight destinations we would book for the best value of the year, ranked with the cheaper window that still delivers great conditions and easy tee times at the marquee courses.

How we chose

We ranked these eight on the size of the value gap between peak and shoulder, the reliability of the weather in the cheaper weeks, and the quality of the golf you can book once the crowds thin. The principle is the same everywhere: travel a few weeks off the busiest dates and green fees, packages and flights commonly fall by a quarter to a half, while the marquee tee sheets open up. The trade is a slightly higher chance of weather, so for each destination we name the safest shoulder window, the weeks where the savings are real but the conditions still hold. We led with the sun destinations whose shoulders stay warm and dry, then the links coasts whose shoulder weeks often bring the firmest golf of the year.

The 8 best shoulder season value destinations

1

The Algarve

Best window: November and March · mild and cheap

The Algarve is the value capital of European golf, and its shoulder weeks are unbeatable. Either side of the spring and autumn peaks, in November and March, the southern Portuguese coast stays mild and playable while green fees and package prices fall sharply and the marquee courses around Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo open up. You give up a little warmth and daylight, but the golf at Monte Rei, San Lorenzo and the Quinta do Lago courses is the same, at a fraction of the cost. Our top shoulder season pick by a clear margin.

2

Scotland

Best window: May and late September into October

The shoulders of the Scottish links season, May and the back end of September into October, are a connoisseur's secret. Fees drop below the high summer peak, the marquee tee sheets at St Andrews and the great clubs are easier to secure, and the firm, fast autumn turf can bring the best playing conditions of the year. The weather is a gamble in either direction, but pack layers and the value, the space and the atmosphere of the links out of peak more than repay it. The best time to chase a hard to book Scottish round.

3

The Costa del Sol

Best window: late November and early summer

Southern Spain's golf coast is busiest and dearest in spring and autumn, so the value lies in late November and the start of summer, when the weather is still warm and the fees and crowds ease. The marquee courses around Marbella, Sotogrande and Casares, including Valderrama and Finca Cortesin, are easier to book and cheaper to play, and the long Mediterranean evenings hold late into the year. A reliable, easy to reach shoulder season trip with a deep choice of courses.

4

Arizona and Scottsdale

Best window: November and May · between winter peak and summer heat

Desert golf in Arizona commands premium fees through the winter peak and shuts down in the summer heat, which leaves two superb value windows on the shoulders: November, before the snowbirds arrive, and May, as the season winds down. The Scottsdale courses, from the TPC Stadium to Troon North and We-Ko-Pa, are warm, dry and dramatically cheaper in these weeks, with tee times easy to find. Play early in May to stay ahead of the building heat.

5

Belek and the Turkish coast

Best window: late autumn and early spring

Belek on Turkey's Mediterranean coast is already among the best value resort golf in the world, and the shoulder weeks make it cheaper still. Late autumn and early spring, either side of the busy peaks, bring mild golf and steep discounts on the all inclusive resorts and their courses, the Montgomerie, Carya and the Regnum Carya layouts among them. With stay and play packages built for value and a cluster of courses minutes apart, the Turkish coast is hard to beat for a budget conscious group.

6

Florida

Best window: October to November and late April into May

Florida's golf peaks with the winter snowbird season, so the value windows fall in the autumn, October into November, and the late spring, from the back of April into May, when the weather is warm, the courses are quieter and the fees are well below peak. From the resort golf of Orlando and the PGA hub at Palm Beach to the Gulf coast, these shoulder weeks let you play more for less, with afternoon heat and the odd storm the only trade against the savings.

7

Dubai and the Gulf

Best window: October and April · either side of the cool peak

The Gulf golf season runs through the cool winter, when fees are at their highest, so the value sits on the shoulders in October and April, when the heat has eased but the peak rates have not fully arrived. The marquee Dubai and Abu Dhabi courses, the Emirates Majlis, Jumeirah Golf Estates and Yas Links among them, are warm, immaculate and cheaper to play in these weeks, with early tee times the answer to any lingering midday heat. A premium destination at a sensible price.

8

Morocco

Best window: November and March · Marrakech and Agadir

Morocco offers some of the best value golf in reach of Europe, and its shoulder weeks in November and March pair mild, dry weather with low fees and quiet courses. Marrakech, with its cluster of courses below the snow capped Atlas, and Agadir on the Atlantic coast give a warm, exotic and affordable trip in the weeks either side of peak, with short flights from much of Europe and a culture and cuisine that make the non golf hours a pleasure. A characterful value escape.

Shoulder season golf questions

What is shoulder season in golf?

Shoulder season is the stretch of weeks just before and after a destination's peak, when the weather is still good but green fees, flights and hotels drop and the courses are far less crowded. For a sun destination like the Algarve or the Costa del Sol that means late autumn and early spring rather than the spring and autumn peaks; for the Scottish links it means May and late September into October either side of high summer. Shoulder weeks deliver the best value golf of the year. Always confirm current rates directly before booking.

Where is the best value golf in shoulder season?

The Algarve is our top pick for shoulder season value, with mild, playable golf in November and March at a fraction of peak fees. Scotland in May and October, the Costa del Sol in late autumn, Arizona in November and May, and Turkey's Belek coast in spring and autumn all deliver excellent conditions at well below peak prices. The common thread is travelling a few weeks off the busiest dates, when fees can fall by a third or more. Always confirm current fees directly before booking.

How much can you save playing golf in shoulder season?

Savings vary by destination, but green fees, flights and hotels commonly fall by a quarter to a half off peak in the shoulder weeks, and the marquee courses are far easier to book. A round that costs a premium in the high season can drop sharply a few weeks either side, and package operators discount stay and play deals to fill the quieter dates. The trade is a slightly higher chance of weather, which is why we name the safest shoulder window for each destination.

Is shoulder season a good time for a golf holiday?

Yes, for value hunters it is often the best time of all. You give up a small amount of weather reliability and the longest daylight, but you gain lower fees, quieter courses, easier tee times at the marquee venues and cheaper travel. For sun destinations the shoulder weeks are still warm and dry enough for comfortable golf, and for the links the shoulders of the season can bring some of the firmest, most enjoyable conditions of the year.
