Why golf in Cyprus

Cyprus is the easy winter golf escape that the Mediterranean does so well, with the added draw of being playable in every month of the year. The golf is concentrated in the south west, around Paphos, where four championship courses sit within about half an hour of one another, threaded through pine, olive and carob on hillsides that fall away to the sea. The result is a compact, low stress golf trip: one base, short transfers, and a course for every mood, from the dramatic ravines of Aphrodite Hills to the serene plateau of Minthis high in the hills.

It is the climate that sells the island. While much of Europe shuts down for winter, Cyprus stays warm and dry, drawing northern European golfers from October through April. Add the food, the archaeology of ancient Paphos, and the gentle pace, and Cyprus works as well for a couples trip or a golf and beach week as it does for a keen group chasing rounds. The courses are designed by names that travel, from Cabell Robinson to Sir Nick Faldo, and the conditioning has stepped up markedly over the last decade.

The regions

The Paphos Coast

Aphrodite Hills and Secret Valley near Kouklia, perched above the sea on the road between Paphos and Limassol, the heart of the island's golf with resort hotels on the doorstep.

The Paphos Hills

Minthis on its plateau at 550 metres and Elea Estate among the olive groves to the north, cooler, greener and more rural, an easy drive up from the coast.

Limassol and beyond

The lively resort city of Limassol sits 45 minutes east, a livelier base for the evenings, with the courses and the beaches of the Paphos region all within reach.

The courses that matter

Aphrodite Hills

Cabell Robinson, 2002 · Par 71 · Kouklia

The island's flagship, a PGA National course that tumbles across two plateaus split by a deep ravine, with the par 3 7th carrying the gorge and the sea on the horizon. The five star resort makes it the natural trip base.

Elea Estate

Sir Nick Faldo · Par 71 · north of Paphos

Faldo's Cyprus design, a strategic, well bunkered layout through olive groves with views to the coast, technically the most demanding test on the island and a favourite of better players.

Minthis Golf Club

Redesigned by Mackenzie and Ebert · Tsada

The oldest course in the area, reborn on its mountain plateau at 550 metres around a 12th century monastery, cool and serene with long views over the hills, walkable and full of character.

Secret Valley

Near Kouklia · Par 72

Set in a sheltered valley beneath dramatic rock formations close to Aphrodite Hills, a gentler, scenic round and the value pick of the four, an easy companion to the flagship course next door.

Getting there and around

Paphos has its own international airport just 15 minutes from the coastal courses, with direct seasonal flights from across Europe, which makes it the smart arrival for a golf trip. Larnaca airport in the south east is busier and better connected year round, about 90 minutes away by the motorway. A hire car is worth having, since the courses are spread between the coast and the hills, but the distances are short and the roads quiet, so the driving between rounds is genuinely easy. Many golfers staying at Aphrodite Hills barely need the car at all, with the course, the hotel and the village all on one estate.

Where to stay

Aphrodite Hills is the obvious golf base, a self contained resort with the course, a five star hotel, villas, a spa and restaurants in one place, ideal for a group or a family that wants golf and the beach in easy reach. For more of a holiday feel, the seafront hotels of Paphos and the livelier resorts of Limassol put the courses within a short drive while adding the town, the restaurants and the nightlife. Book the resort rooms ahead for the busy spring and autumn windows, and let one planner line up the right base for the trip.
