Why golf in Mallorca
Mallorca packs more good golf into a short transfer than almost anywhere in the Mediterranean. More than twenty courses sit within an hour of Palma airport, the climate is mild enough to play through the winter, and the island pairs the golf with a food, wine and coastline that rival anywhere in Europe. The marquee names cluster close together: Son Gual, a Thomas Himmel design east of the capital that opened in 2007 and is routinely called the best on the island, the seaside Robert Trent Jones Jr course at Alcanada on the Bay of Alcudia, and the polished resort layout at Son Muntaner above Palma. It is a destination that suits the couple, the buddies group and the society in equal measure.
The island also makes a trip easy. Palma takes direct flights from across Europe, the transfers are short, and the resorts are built for golf, from five star estates around Son Vida to value bases along the southwest coast at Calvia and the bay towns of the northeast. Add green fees well below the great links of Britain and Ireland, a season that runs from autumn through spring while much of the continent is cold, and an island small enough to play the best of it from a single base, and Mallorca earns its place among the leading golf escapes in the Mediterranean.
The regions
Palma and Calvia
The southwest is the heart of Mallorcan golf, with Son Gual just east of the city, the Son Vida estate courses including Son Muntaner above Palma, and the Calvia cluster around Santa Ponsa and the west coast resorts, the easiest base for a first trip.
The Northeast
The Bay of Alcudia and the Capdepera coast hold the island's only seaside course at Alcanada, beneath its lighthouse island, plus the resort golf around Pollensa and the northeast bays, a quieter and scenic alternative to the busy south.
The East Coast
The east around Son Servera and Porto Colom offers Pula Golf and Vall d'Or among the pines and low hills, a relaxed, less crowded region that pairs golf with the coves and resorts of the eastern shore.
The courses that matter
Golf Son Gual
Widely rated the finest course on the island and a fixture inside the better continental Europe lists, a Thomas Himmel design with bent grass from tee to green, broad fairways, dramatic bunkering and immaculate conditioning a few minutes east of the capital.
Club de Golf Alcanada
The only course on Mallorca right by the sea, a Robert Trent Jones Jr layout running along the Bay of Alcudia with the island and lighthouse of Alcanada offshore, the most photographed golf on the island and many visitors' favourite round.
Son Muntaner
A Kurt Rossknecht design and the flagship of the Son Vida estate above Palma, a mature, tree lined parkland with undulating fairways, ancient olive trees and city views, the easiest marquee course to pair with a stay in the capital.
Golf Santa Ponsa I
A long, open championship course in Calvia that has staged the Balearic Open and other professional events over the years, a roomy, forgiving layout that suits higher handicaps and sits at the heart of the busy southwest resort belt.
Pula Golf
A wooded, undulating course near Son Servera on the east of the island that has hosted European Tour and senior events, a quieter and characterful round set among pines and old stone farm buildings away from the southern crowds.
T Golf Calvia, Poniente
A long established course in the Calvia hills behind the southwest coast, a hilly, scenic layout with sea glimpses that has long been a value favourite for groups basing themselves around Magaluf and Palmanova.
Capdepera Golf
A roomy, hilly course in the northeast near Capdepera and the resorts of the Bay of Alcudia, a long layout with wide fairways and mountain backdrops that complements a trip built around nearby Alcanada.
Vall d'Or Golf
A tight, pretty course threaded through pines on the southeast coast near Porto Colom, a holiday round with sea views and a relaxed pace that pairs well with the coves and resorts of the eastern shore.
Son Vida
The oldest course on the island, opened in the 1960s on the Son Vida estate above Palma, a short, mature parkland of tight tree lined corridors and city views that remains a popular and gentle round for a city based trip.
Golf d'Andratx
A modern, hilly course above Camp de Mar in the island's southwest corner, a tight and dramatic layout with steep terrain and sea views that rewards accurate iron play over length.

Getting there and around
Mallorca is one of the easiest golf islands in the Mediterranean to reach. Palma de Mallorca airport takes direct flights from across Europe and sits within thirty minutes of Son Gual, the Son Vida estate and the Calvia cluster, so a southwest base can play most of the island's best golf without a long drive. A hire car is useful for the northeast and east, where Alcanada, Capdepera and the Son Servera courses are around an hour from the capital, though many groups staying in the southwest rely on the hotel shuttle and the occasional taxi for the closer rounds. The island is small enough that no course is more than about ninety minutes from another.
Where to stay
Match the base to the trip. For the marquee golf and a city feel, the Son Vida estate above Palma puts Son Muntaner and Son Vida on the doorstep with Son Gual a short drive away, while the southwest coast at Calvia, Santa Ponsa and Camp de Mar is the value belt, lively and close to the Calvia courses. For Alcanada and a quieter, scenic trip, the resorts of the Bay of Alcudia and Pollensa in the northeast keep the seaside round close, and the east around Son Servera anchors a relaxed stay near Pula and Capdepera. Book the resort hotels well ahead for the spring and autumn peaks.
