Who this trip suits

A buddies trip to Portugal is the European golf week that everyone says yes to. The Algarve has spent four decades perfecting it: dozens of quality courses packed into a short stretch of coast, dependable sunshine for most of the year, short, cheap flights from across the UK and Europe, and resort towns built around marinas, beaches and a proper night out. It suits the fourball that wants top courses without a long haul, the society that wants a different layout every day, and the milestone trip that wants golf, sun and value in the same week. Vilamoura is the classic base, with its marina, its bars and several of the region's best courses within a fifteen minute drive.

If your group wants one round that lifts the trip above the ordinary, make it Monte Rei North, the Jack Nicklaus signature course rated the finest in Portugal and a fixture in the world top 100, out on its own in the quiet eastern Algarve. Build the rest around San Lorenzo in the Ria Formosa nature reserve, the Arnold Palmer designed Victoria course at Vilamoura and a Quinta do Lago or Vale do Lobo round, and you have the best value bucket list week in European golf. Prefer something fresher and quieter, and the Lisbon coast offers an equally strong cluster around West Cliffs and Praia del Rey.

Best time to book

The Algarve plays year round, but spring and autumn are the sweet spots, roughly March to May and September to November, with warm, dry days and the courses in peak condition, and they are also the busiest and priciest. Winter is mild and excellent value, a genuine off season golf option when much of northern Europe is closed, while high summer is hot and best played early or late. Book the marquee tee sheet first, since Monte Rei and the top Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura times in spring and autumn fill months ahead, then build the rest of the week around them. A shoulder season trip trades a little certainty for softer rates and quieter fairways.
