Who this trip suits

A luxury tour of Mexico is the warm weather answer to the great links pilgrimages: world ranked golf on dramatic coastlines, paired with resorts and food that turn the off course hours into the other half of the trip. Los Cabos is the anchor, a desert peninsula where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez and where Jack Nicklaus, Davis Love III and Tiger Woods have all built signature courses within a few miles of one another. It suits buddies groups marking a milestone, couples who want the golf and the spa in equal measure, and small societies chasing winter sun on a short to medium flight from North America.

If your group wants the single most photographed round, build the trip around Quivira on the cliffs above Cabo San Lucas. Add the Davis Love III Dunes course and Tiger Woods's El Cardonal at the private Diamante club, then decide whether to stay in Los Cabos or extend across the country to the Tail of the Whale island green at Punta Mita and the PGA Tour fairways of El Camaleon at Mayakoba on the Caribbean.

The courses to build around

Quivira Golf Club

Jack Nicklaus, 2014 · Par 72 · Cabo San Lucas

The most dramatic round in Los Cabos, routed high along the granite cliffs at the very tip of the Baja peninsula where the Pacific crashes below. Five comfort stations and ocean views from almost every tee make it the round every visitor wants on the card. Tee times come with a stay at the Pueblo Bonito resorts.

Diamante, Dunes Course

Davis Love III, 2009 · Par 72 · Pacific dunes

A links inspired masterpiece laid through enormous natural sand dunes on the Pacific shore, long ranked the best course in Mexico. Wide, firm fairways and windswept greens reward a links thinker. Diamante is a private club, so access comes through a resort stay or a member host.

Diamante, El Cardonal

Tiger Woods, 2014 · Par 72 · Cabo San Lucas

The first golf course Tiger Woods built, opened in late 2014 on the higher ground at Diamante with wide fairways, short grass run offs and a strategy first feel drawn from the courses he grew up admiring. A genuine collector's round and a fascinating companion to the Dunes next door.

Punta Mita, Pacifico

Jack Nicklaus · Par 72 · Riviera Nayarit

The Nicklaus signature course north of Puerto Vallarta, home to the Tail of the Whale, the only natural island green in the game, an optional par 3 reached by an amphibious cart when the surf allows. Reserved for guests of the Four Seasons and St Regis resorts that frame it.

El Camaleon, Mayakoba

Greg Norman, 2005 · Par 71 · Riviera Maya

The first PGA Tour course in Mexico, threading jungle, mangrove, limestone canals and the Caribbean shore on the Riviera Maya. Famous for the cenote in the middle of a fairway and the Devil's Mouth bunker on the opener. Played from the luxury Mayakoba resorts south of Cancun.

A sample seven night, five round tour

Day 1

Arrive Los Cabos, settle in

Fly into San Jose del Cabo, meet the driver and check into a resort along the tourist corridor or out at Diamante. An easy evening on the range and dinner overlooking the Sea of Cortez.

Day 2

Quivira

The marquee round, high on the Pacific cliffs above Cabo San Lucas. Linger at the comfort stations, then a long lunch back at the resort and an afternoon by the water.

Day 3

Diamante Dunes

The links inspired round through the great dunes, ideally walked with a caddie. A spa afternoon or a panga fishing trip from the marina to follow.

Day 4

Rest day or El Cardonal

A beach and pool day, a whale watching trip in winter, or a second Diamante round on the Tiger Woods course for the keen group.

Day 5

Fly to Punta Mita

A short hop across to Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit. Check into the Four Seasons or St Regis and play an evening nine to settle in.

Day 6

Punta Mita, Pacifico

The full Nicklaus round, including the carry to the Tail of the Whale island green if the surf allows. Sunset and seafood on the point afterward.

Day 7

Free day, or fly home

A final morning round on the Bahia course, or a day of beach and town before the flight north. Groups chasing the Caribbean swap this leg for Mayakoba instead.

Los Cabos keeps the marquee rounds within a short drive of one another. Adding Punta Mita or the Riviera Maya means a domestic flight rather than a transfer, so most groups anchor in one region and treat the second as an extension. A private driver and a planned tee sheet keep the days easy.

Best time to book

The dry season from December to April is the prime window across Mexico, with warm, settled days and the lowest chance of rain. Los Cabos is the most reliable, dry and sunny right through the winter, while May and November are quieter, cheaper shoulder months that still play beautifully. June to October is hotter and wetter on the Pacific and overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season on the Caribbean side, so the Riviera Maya is best avoided then. Book the marquee Los Cabos courses four to eight weeks ahead in high season, and lock the resort rooms earlier still for the Christmas, New Year and spring break weeks.
