Who this trip suits
A Portugal golf society trip is one of the most rewarding group decisions an organizer can make. The country offers concentrated course quality, short transfers between venues, reliable sunshine for the majority of the year, and a well developed infrastructure for groups who want properly organized competition golf rather than a loose collection of rounds. Faro airport puts the Algarve within two and a half hours of most of the United Kingdom and Ireland, and Lisbon serves the Atlantic coast courses with equal ease.
This page is written for the person running the trip: the society captain, club secretary or organizing committee member managing a group anywhere from 8 to 24 players. It covers course selection, group rate structures, a sample five-night itinerary with costs per head, the best window to travel and where to find the best stay and play value.
- Societies of 8 or more who want pre-blocked tee times, a named starting sheet and at least one complimentary place per eight paying members.
- Groups running an order of merit across multiple days, a Stableford competition or a team event with a proper prize presentation.
- Organizers who need a single point of contact for tee times, accommodation, transfers and airport logistics across a party of up to 24.
- Societies who want genuine variety: a mix of parkland, clifftop and links-style layouts within a 40-minute radius of the same hotel base.
- Groups happy to trade a long-haul destination for outstanding course quality, competitive pricing in shoulder season and a two to three hour flight from northern Europe.
Portugal golf society trips work for all handicap levels. The Algarve's leading venues publish society handicap limits, but most of the courses on this page accept players across the full handicap range when visiting as a group. Confirm limits directly when you request your society rate.
The courses to build around
Portugal offers two distinct regions for a society trip, each with its own character. The Algarve in the south is the volume center: 30 or more courses within a 90-minute corridor between Faro and the Spanish border. The Lisbon coast to the north offers a smaller, more curated selection of venues that rank among the finest on the continent. Most societies commit to one region per trip. Green fees below are indicative for the 2026 season; always confirm directly before booking.
For a deeper introduction to both regions, see our full guide to golf in Portugal and the best golf courses in Portugal ranked.
Monte Rei Golf & Country Club
Consistently ranked the top course in Portugal and among the top 10 in Europe, Monte Rei is built across 200 hectares of cork and olive-covered hillside near Vila Nova de Cacela. Nicklaus routed every hole to play toward a distant Atlantic view. Indicative 2026 green fees: about €178 to €220 per round, inclusive of buggy. A society visit here anchors a premium Algarve itinerary.
Quinta do Lago South
The South is a favourite of tour players and a staple of serious society itineraries. Fairways run through umbrella pines alongside the Ria Formosa lagoon, with multiple route options on several par 4s that reward decision-making. Indicative 2026 green fees: about €165 to €185 per round by season.
San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo is widely regarded as one of the finest parkland courses in Europe, sitting inside the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve with several holes playing directly above the saltwater marshes. Its limited daily access makes pre-booking essential for society groups. Indicative 2026 green fees: from about €142 per round.
Vale do Lobo Royal
Home to the most photographed hole in Portuguese golf: the 16th, a par 3 across two ravines with a 70-metre drop to the beach below. The Royal has rolling fairways, pine-bordered corridors and an approachable layout that works well for a society with mixed handicaps. Indicative 2026 green fees: available on request from the resort.
Vilamoura Old Course
The Old Course is the Algarve's most visited layout and the backbone of hundreds of society trips each year. Wide fairways, generous greens and a classic parkland feel make it ideal as the opening or mid-trip round. Booking three or more Dom Pedro rounds earns a group discount of up to 18 percent. Indicative 2026 green fees: about €153 to €274 by season.
Pinheiros Altos
A 27-hole layout named The Pines, The Corks and The Olives, winding through one of the Algarve's densest pine forests. The variety across three nines means a society can run a different 18 on the same visit. Indicative 2026 green fees: from about €108 per round, among the best value for the Quinta do Lago area.
Oitavos Dunes
Set inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Oitavos Dunes is a links-influenced layout with Atlantic views from nearly every hole and the Sintra hills as a backdrop. It regularly ranks in the top 100 courses in continental Europe. Indicative 2026 green fees: from about €123 weekday and €142 weekend.
Praia D'El Rey
Praia D'El Rey sends four holes directly onto the Atlantic dunes with ocean carries and wind-shaped greens. The back nine is among the most dramatic closing runs available to visiting societies in Europe. It sits on the Silver Coast, about an hour north of Lisbon, pairing naturally with West Cliffs next door.
West Cliffs
Opened in 2017 and quickly ranked among Portugal's top three layouts, West Cliffs plays across 200 hectares of Atlantic dunes and clifftop terrain. It pairs with Praia D'El Rey for an exceptional two-round Silver Coast day. Societies prepared to travel outside the Algarve will find this among the most talked-about new designs in Europe.
A sample structure: 5 nights, 4 rounds
The structure below is built around an Algarve base for a society of 12 to 16 players running a four-round order of merit. We can tune every element: the course order, tee time windows, transfer logistics and whether you add or swap the Lisbon coast extension. Arrival from the United Kingdom is typically via Faro airport.
Arrive Faro. Transfer to your hotel base in the Quinta do Lago or Vilamoura corridor. Afternoon registration and handicap confirmation for order of merit purposes. Welcome dinner at the resort.
Round 1: Vilamoura Old Course. A fair and welcoming opener for a group with a wide handicap spread. Society starting sheet with tee times blocked across 90 minutes. First scores go on the order of merit board.
Round 2: Quinta do Lago South or Pinheiros Altos. The step up in difficulty separates the order of merit field. Afternoon free for practice, a pool afternoon or optional transfer to the marina.
Round 3: San Lorenzo or Monte Rei. This is the marquee round, the one the group will talk about longest. Monte Rei is the more dramatic choice; San Lorenzo is the more refined one. Both require advance booking for society groups.
Round 4: Vale do Lobo Royal. The final competitive round and the order of merit decider. The 16th at Vale do Lobo is a natural moment for a society photograph. Prize presentation and gala dinner in the evening.
Depart via Faro. Early checkout where needed. Optional morning round at Pinheiros Altos for those on later flights.
Lisbon coast variation: base in Cascais for nights 1 to 3, play Oitavos Dunes and Penha Longa, then transfer south to the Algarve for nights 4 and 5 and two Quinta do Lago rounds. Transfer between regions is about 3 hours by road or a short domestic flight.

Best time to go and to book
Portugal is a year round golf destination. The Algarve records more than 300 days of sunshine annually, and even in January the daytime temperature along the southern coast typically reaches 15 to 18 degrees Celsius. That said, the timing of your society trip has a significant effect on both cost and conditions.
Spring (March to May) is the most popular window for societies. Temperatures sit between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius, the courses are at peak condition after winter aeration programs have recovered, and green fees are in mid-season territory rather than summer peaks. Book spring tee times at Quinta do Lago South and San Lorenzo at least three to four months in advance. Hotels in the Algarve fill quickly for April and early May.
Autumn (September to November) is the second choice for many UK and Irish societies. September carries summer prices but October and November drop sharply. Groups prepared to travel in late October or November will find the strongest combination of value, availability and weather. Some operators offer a "1 free in 8" model exclusively in the winter period; check when requesting your rate.
Winter (December to February) is the most affordable window. The Algarve remains a genuine warm escape when northern European courses are closed or unplayable. Daytime temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees Celsius and calm conditions make for comfortable golf, though morning frost on elevated inland courses is possible in December and January.
Summer (June to August) is manageable with early morning tee times. Temperatures reach 30 degrees Celsius or above inland; coastal venues such as Oitavos Dunes and Vale do Lobo Royal benefit from Atlantic breezes. Green fees peak in July and August; societies who prioritize value should look elsewhere in the calendar.
When to book: for spring and autumn travel, request society tee times four to six months in advance at the premium venues (Monte Rei, San Lorenzo, Quinta do Lago South). Accommodation blocks for groups of 12 or more should be held even earlier. For winter travel, a lead time of six to eight weeks is usually sufficient at most Algarve venues.

Portugal golf society trips, answered
How many rounds can a society fit into five nights in Portugal?
Most societies comfortably fit four rounds into a five-night trip, sometimes five if the group is willing to play on both the arrival evening and departure morning. Four rounds is the standard that avoids fatigue and keeps the social side of the trip intact.
What group size do Portugal courses require for a society rate?
Most Algarve and Lisbon coast courses define a society as eight or more players. Common incentives include one complimentary place per eight paying players, pre-blocked tee times, a dedicated starting sheet, and a competition scorecard printed to your format. Groups of 12 or more often unlock a second tier of discounts.
Which region is better for a society trip, the Algarve or the Lisbon coast?
The Algarve suits societies that want the widest choice of courses within a short drive, the most competitive accommodation pricing in shoulder season, and the warmest winter temperatures. The Lisbon coast suits societies that want variety across parkland, links and clifftop layouts, and are happy to base themselves in or near Cascais with one or two longer transfers.
Can a society run its own competition format in Portugal?
Yes, and most courses actively support it. Societies can run Stableford, stroke play, team events or order of merit rounds across multiple days. Ask the club for a dedicated starter and a printed starting sheet with your society name on it. Some venues also provide a prize table and presentation space in the clubhouse.
What is the best time of year for a Portugal golf society trip?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the best balance of mild temperatures, excellent course conditions and competitive rates. Winter from December to February is mild enough in the Algarve for year round play and often the most affordable window. Summer is hot for walking but the courses remain open; early morning tee times make July and August workable.
