Who this trip suits

The Algarve is the European buddies trip that every other destination is measured against. Along a single short stretch of southern Portugal sit around forty courses, dependable sunshine for most of the year, short and inexpensive flights into Faro, and resort towns built for groups, with Vilamoura the classic base around its marina, restaurants and lively bars. It suits the fourball that wants a different top course every day without a long drive, the society that wants value and reliability, and the milestone trip that wants golf, sun and a good time in equal measure. You play, you eat well on the marina, and you do it all again the next morning.

The region divides neatly into three. The central Algarve around Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago is the heartland, with the most courses and the easiest logistics. The east, out toward the Spanish border, holds Monte Rei North, the Jack Nicklaus signature course rated the best in Portugal and the trip's natural marquee day. The west, around Lagos, brings the coast into play with breezier, scenic golf at Palmares and Espiche. Base in the centre, travel out for the headline rounds, and you have the best value bucket list week in European golf.

The courses to build around

San Lorenzo golf course in the Ria Formosa reserve, the Algarve

San Lorenzo

Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore · Quinta do Lago

A long time top three course in Portugal, winding through the Ria Formosa nature reserve with fairways edged by saltwater marsh, lagoons and the Atlantic, and a closing stretch by the water that is among the most photographed in the region.

Palmares golf course near Lagos in the western Algarve

Palmares, Lagos

Coastal links and parkland · Western Algarve

The pick of the west, a scenic resort course near Lagos with genuine links holes running down to the beach and the bay, breezier and more dramatic than the central parklands and a fine change of pace for a longer trip.

Designers and pars verified June 2026 from course and tour listings. Monte Rei runs limited daily play and rates move with season. Always confirm access and fees directly before booking.

Best time to book

The Algarve plays year round, but spring and autumn are the sweet spots, roughly March to May and September to November, with warm, dry days and the courses at their best, and they are also the busiest and priciest. Winter is mild and excellent value, one of the few genuine off season golf options in Europe, while high summer is hot and best played early or late. Book the marquee tee sheet first, since Monte Rei and the top central times in spring and autumn fill months ahead, then build the rest of the week around them. A shoulder season trip trades a little certainty for softer rates and quieter fairways.
