The Best Golf Courses in Vietnam

In barely fifteen years Vietnam has become one of Asia's great golf destinations, and the reason is the coast. Greg Norman, Robert Trent Jones II, Nick Faldo and Luke Donald have all built here, stringing championship courses along the South China Sea from Da Nang to Ho Tram. Add the cool Dalat highlands and the Hanoi resorts and you have a country that rewards a full tour. Here are the eight we rate most highly, ranked.

How we chose them

Vietnam's golf boom is a coastal story. On free draining sand along the South China Sea, the game's best known architects have laid out a run of championship courses that now rank with anything in Asia, led by Greg Norman's links style work at Ho Tram, Da Nang and Cam Ranh. The central coast around Da Nang and Hoi An is the natural hub, with several top courses inside an hour of one another and a string of beach resorts to base in, which is why most first trips start there.

We weighed design quality, conditioning, setting and how rewarding the round is for a travelling golfer, and we made room for the variety that makes Vietnam worth a full tour: the inland mountain drama of Ba Na Hills, the colonial cool of Dalat in the highlands, and the twin green Nicklaus design that anchors the golf around Hanoi. Every designer and opening year here was checked at the time of writing. The verdicts and the order are ours. If you want these built into a costed multi course trip, that is what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

The Bluffs Grand Ho Tram

Greg Norman · par 71 · Ho Tram · links style

The best course in Vietnam and one Greg Norman rates among the finest he has built, an 18 hole par 71 links style layout draped over enormous sand dunes along two miles of undeveloped coast about two hours from Ho Chi Minh City. The scale is extraordinary, with fairways tumbling between towering dunes and the South China Sea in constant view, and the wind turning a beautiful course into a serious test. It has featured high on Golf Digest's world ranking and is the one essential round on any Vietnam golf trip.

02

Hoiana Shores Golf Club

Robert Trent Jones II · near Hoi An · coastal links

The first Robert Trent Jones II course in Vietnam and the pick of the central coast, a true seaside links running right along the South China Sea south of Hoi An. Firm turf, sea grasses, deep bunkering and an exposed, windswept routing give it the feel of a links transplanted to the tropics, and the ocean holes are as good as any in the region. Attached to a smart beach resort, it is the natural centrepiece of a Da Nang and Hoi An trip and a clear step above most of its neighbours.

03

BRG Da Nang Golf Resort, Norman Course

Greg Norman, Harley Kruse · opened 2010 · Da Nang

The course that started the coastal boom, Greg Norman's dunes layout north of Hoi An that opened in 2010 as the first links style course in Vietnam and was quickly named among the best new courses in the world. Sandy waste areas, firm fairways and a links character set it apart, with the short par 3 16th, framed by the sea and the Cham Islands, its signature. A second course has since joined it on the same resort. It remains a benchmark for golf in central Vietnam.

04

Laguna Lang Co Golf Club

Nick Faldo · opened 2013 · Lang Co

Sir Nick Faldo's Vietnam design, opened by the six time major winner in 2013 on a dramatic site between the mountains and the sea at Lang Co, on the coast road between Da Nang and Hue. The routing makes the most of a rare setting, with paddy fields, a meandering river and the Truong Son mountains framing holes that run down toward the beach. Part of a Banyan Tree and Angsana resort complex, it is a relaxed, scenic round and a fine third course on a central coast tour.

05

KN Golf Links, Cam Ranh

Greg Norman · opened 2018 · Cam Ranh Bay

A course Greg Norman has said ranks among the top ten he has worked on, opened in late 2018 on the sandy ground of Cam Ranh Bay near Nha Trang. A genuine links laid over natural duneland, with a separate nine hole Oasis course running inland, it brings the firm, fast, wind exposed golf of Ho Tram to the south central coast. Less heralded than the Da Nang courses only because of its location, it is one of the best and most authentic links experiences in the country and worth the detour.

06

Ba Na Hills Golf Club

Luke Donald with IMG · Da Nang · inland

The first Luke Donald design in Asia, an inland course set in a forested valley at the foot of the Ba Na Hills cable car station, about half an hour from Da Nang. A complete contrast to the coastal links, it winds through jungle, streams and dramatic elevation change in a cool mountain setting, with a strategic, shotmaker's character that reflects its designer. Floodlit for night golf, it makes an excellent counterpoint round on a central coast trip and one of the prettiest settings in Vietnamese golf.

07

Dalat Palace Golf Club

highlands · colonial era origins

One of the oldest and most charming courses in Vietnam, set at altitude in the cool pine clad highlands of Dalat, with origins in the colonial era when the hill station served as a French summer retreat. Rebuilt to a high standard, it plays through mature pines and around a lake in a temperate climate that feels nothing like the tropical coast, the fairways soft and green year round. A relaxed, atmospheric round and the reason a Dalat stop earns a place on a wider Vietnam tour.

08

BRG Legend Hill Golf Resort

Nicklaus Design · opened 2015 · near Hanoi

The pick of the golf around the capital, a Nicklaus Design course opened in 2015 about an hour north of Hanoi, notable for the twin greens it gives almost every hole. The double greens add real variety and let the course play two distinct ways, and the rolling, well bunkered layout is the most polished championship test within reach of the city. For golfers basing a trip in Hanoi or combining the game with Halong Bay and the north, it is the standout round.

Vietnam golf questions

What is the best golf course in Vietnam?

The Bluffs Grand Ho Tram, a Greg Norman design set among huge sand dunes on the coast about two hours from Ho Chi Minh City, is widely rated the best golf course in Vietnam and one of the finest in Asia. Hoiana Shores and the Norman course at Da Nang lead the central coast.

Where is the best golf in Vietnam?

Central Vietnam around Da Nang and Hoi An has the densest cluster of top courses, including Hoiana Shores, BRG Da Nang and Ba Na Hills, all close together. The southern coast at Ho Tram and Cam Ranh holds The Bluffs and KN Golf Links, the country's other standouts, while Dalat and Hanoi round out a full tour.

How many courses should I play on a Vietnam trip?

A first trip of seven nights based on the central coast plays comfortably four to five courses, pairing Hoiana Shores, BRG Da Nang, Laguna Lang Co and Ba Na Hills. Add the southern links at Ho Tram and Cam Ranh, or a Dalat highlands stop, for a fuller two week tour.

When is the best time to play golf in Vietnam?

The dry season from February to August suits the central coast around Da Nang, while the south near Ho Chi Minh City and Ho Tram plays best from November to April. The Dalat highlands stay cool and playable year round, so a full country tour works around the shoulder months of either coast.
