Vietnam Golf and Country Club
Vietnam Golf and Country Club brought championship golf to Ho Chi Minh City in the 1990s and still offers the most convenient 36 holes in the south. The West course by Chen King Shih opened in 1994, the East course by the major champion Lee Trevino followed in 1997, both par 72 layouts only twenty kilometres from the centre of the city, with floodlit play into the evening.

The verdict
Vietnam Golf and Country Club was among the first championship venues in the south of the country and remains the most convenient 36 hole club for golfers based in Ho Chi Minh City. The West course, designed by the Taiwanese architect Chen King Shih, opened in 1994, and the East course, the work of six time major champion Lee Trevino, followed in 1997.
The two layouts complement each other. The West is the tighter, more demanding test, the East a touch more generous off the tee but well defended by bunkers and lakes around its undulating Bermuda greens. Both are par 72, both are kept in good condition, and with floodlights for evening play and a location only twenty kilometres from the centre, this is the easy choice for a round when time in the city is short.

The holes worth the trip
The West course is the one that asks the harder questions, the fairways narrower and the trees pressing in, so accuracy off the tee is rewarded over length. It is the older of the two and the more traditional, a steady parkland test that has hosted plenty of competitive golf since 1994.
Lee Trevino's East course gives the driver a little more room but defends itself cleverly, with bunkers placed to catch the loose shot and lakes guarding several greens. The putting surfaces sit elevated and undulating, so judging pace and reading the Bermuda grain is the key to scoring.
Together the two courses make a full day worthwhile, and the floodlit holes let visitors squeeze in a round after work or before an evening flight. For convenience and variety close to the city, nothing else in Ho Chi Minh City matches it.

Where to stay nearby
Most visiting golfers stay in central Ho Chi Minh City, around District 1, where the best hotels, restaurants and nightlife are concentrated, and make the short drive out to Thu Duc for golf. The course is only about twenty kilometres away, so it is an easy morning or evening round.
For a wider Vietnam golf trip, the city makes a natural southern base before heading to the coast at Danang or up to the cooler hills of Dalat. It is an ideal region to combine a convenient championship round with the food and energy of one of Asia's great cities.
