Tan Son Nhat Golf Course

The verdict

Tan Son Nhat trades on location more than drama, and that is exactly its value. Designed by the respected firm Nelson and Haworth, it sits on flat ground hard against Tan Son Nhat International Airport, around four kilometers from central Ho Chi Minh City, which makes it the obvious choice for golfers with a layover, a half day free, or a business trip to fill. Few courses anywhere are this close to a major downtown.

The layout is generous in scale. Four nine hole loops, each a par 36, combine into two full length par 72 courses, with the individual nines running from about 3,619 to 3,747 yards from the back. The character is classic city parkland: wide, tree lined fairways, lakes brought into play on a number of holes, and large greens, all kept in good order and floodlit for evening play. It is not a destination course in its own right, but as a convenient, well run public round to bookend a Saigon trip, it does the job better than anywhere else in the city.

The holes worth the trip

Because Tan Son Nhat plays as four interchangeable nines, the exact routing depends on the loops the club sends you out on, but the playing test is consistent across the property. The ground is flat, so the design relies on trees, lakes and bunkering rather than elevation to create the strategy. Off the tee, the corridors are wide enough to let you swing freely, but the line you choose sets up the angle into greens that are large and gently contoured.

Water is the recurring theme. Lakes edge into a number of the par 4s and frame the lay up and approach on the par 5s, so club selection and a clear plan matter more than raw length here. The par 3s are the most photogenic holes, several of them played across water to well bunkered targets, and they are where a casual round can quietly leak shots. The longer back tees push the full 18 hole combinations toward 7,400 yards, but the multiple tee options keep it fair for every standard.

None of it will live long in the memory the way a coastal course in Da Nang or Ho Tram does, but that is not the brief. Tan Son Nhat is about a quality round squeezed into a tight schedule, and on that measure it is genuinely useful, with floodlights letting you tee off late and still finish under the city lights.

Where to stay nearby

The whole point of Tan Son Nhat is proximity, so almost any central Ho Chi Minh City hotel works. District 1 puts you among the best dining, rooftop bars and sights, and is only a short ride from both the airport and the first tee, while the hotels clustered near the airport itself are ideal if you are squeezing in a round around a flight.

For a fuller Vietnam golf trip, use Saigon as the gateway and head out to the coast. The bold The Bluffs Ho Tram is the standout within driving distance, while a short domestic hop reaches the celebrated central coast courses around Da Nang, including BRG Da Nang and the seaside Montgomerie Links.
