The Bluffs Ho Tram
Greg Norman routed The Bluffs along a wild ribbon of dune and white sand on Vietnam's southern coast, opening it in 2014 as the most dramatic links style course in the country. A par 71 of about 7,007 yards, it climbs and falls over some of the tallest sand dunes in Asian golf, the South China Sea in view on hole after hole.

The verdict
The Bluffs opened in 2014 on a two mile stretch of coast at Ho Tram, around two hours by road from Ho Chi Minh City. Greg Norman called the site the best piece of golf land he had been given in Asia, and the routing makes the most of it, threading fairways between dunes that rise sixty feet and more above the sea. It is a links in spirit if not in latitude, firm, windswept and played along the water.
What sets it apart is the scale of the dunes and the constant presence of the ocean. The turf runs fast, the greens are large and tilted, and the wind off the South China Sea is the defining hazard. It is a resort course with a championship test inside it, and for a visiting golfer it is the headline round of any trip to southern Vietnam.

The holes worth the trip
The Bluffs asks you to manage the wind and the elevation more than raw distance. Fairways spill between the dunes with generous landing areas, but the slopes feed balls toward trouble and the dune faces frame every shot. The greens are bold and run firm, so reading the tilt and the grain matters as much as the line.
The par 3s are the signatures, several played from high tees down toward the sea with the dunes funnelling the wind. The short holes can swing two or three clubs between morning calm and afternoon breeze, and a low, controlled flight is rewarded over a high soft one.
The closing stretch runs back toward the clubhouse along the highest dunes, with ocean views opening at the crest of each rise. Played firm and into the wind it is a genuine test, played downwind it offers birdies, and either way it sends you home with the sea at your shoulder. The Bluffs is the most photographed round in Vietnamese golf for good reason.

Where to stay nearby
Most visiting golfers stay on site at The Grand Ho Tram, the integrated beach resort that the course belongs to, which puts the first tee minutes from your room and makes early starts easy. The strip combines hotel towers, a long beach and several dining options, and stay and play rates are the most economical way to play the course.
Ho Tram pairs naturally with Ho Chi Minh City for a two centre southern Vietnam trip, mixing the headline links with the city courses and the energy of Saigon. With a few more days you can fold in the courses around Da Nang on the central coast for a fuller national tour.
