The Best Golf Courses in Costa del Sol

They call this stretch of Andalusia the Costa del Golf, and with reason: more than sixty courses run from Sotogrande to Malaga, headed by Robert Trent Jones masterpieces and one of Europe's great championship tests. Whether you want Ryder Cup history, a Solheim Cup host or a stay and play resort, this coast has it. Here are the eight we rate most highly, ranked.

How we chose them

The Costa del Sol is the most developed golf coast in continental Europe, and its best is concentrated at the two ends. To the west sits the Sotogrande estate, just over the line into Cadiz province but universally played as part of any Costa del Sol golf trip, where Robert Trent Jones Sr built his first European course and then Valderrama, the finest of them all. Around Marbella, the Golf Valley of Nueva Andalucia packs three or four serious courses within a few minutes of one another, and to the west again the modern Finca Cortesin has joined the elite by hosting the Solheim Cup.

We weighed design quality, conditioning, championship pedigree and how rewarding the round is for a travelling golfer, and we gave the great Trent Jones courses their due while making room for the modern resort golf that makes this coast so easy to base a trip around. Every designer, opening year and host event here was checked at the time of writing, and where a course is a private members club we say so. The verdicts and the order are ours. If you want these built into a costed trip, that is what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Real Club Valderrama

Robert Trent Jones Sr · remodelled 1985 · Sotogrande · par 71

The best course on the coast and one of the finest in continental Europe, the Robert Trent Jones Sr layout at Sotogrande that hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup, years of the Volvo Masters and two World Golf Championships. Cork oaks frame tight, demanding holes where position is everything, and the par 5 17th, with its water guarded green, remains one of the most discussed holes in the game. Immaculately conditioned and fiercely private, a round here is the headline of any Costa del Sol trip. A members club with limited, premium visitor access.

02

Finca Cortesin Golf Club

Cabell Robinson · opened 2007 · Casares

The modern great of the coast, a Cabell Robinson design that opened in 2007 above Casares and hosted the 2023 Solheim Cup, confirming its place among the best in Europe. Long, beautifully bunkered and generous off the tee but exacting around its large greens, it plays through rolling countryside to the sea with a sense of space the older courses cannot match. The attached five star hotel makes it the pick of the coast for a luxury stay and play, and the most openly accessible of the elite courses here.

03

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande

Robert Trent Jones Sr · 1964 · Sotogrande

The course that started it all, Robert Trent Jones Sr's first design in Europe, opened in 1964 and still regarded as one of the purest examples of his work. Cork oaks, umbrella pines and water frame a classic, strategic routing close to the beach between the Guadiaro river and the Sotogrande marina. It set the template for the great Andalusian courses that followed, and remains a connoisseur's round, mature and beautifully balanced. A private members club that welcomes a limited number of visitors.

04

La Reserva de Sotogrande

Cabell Robinson · opened 2003 · Sotogrande

A Cabell Robinson design that opened in 2003 in the hills above Sotogrande, sweeping and dramatic across rolling terrain with wide fairways, bold bunkering and long views over the estate to the sea. Younger and more openly bookable than its famous neighbours, it has quickly risen to the top rank of Spanish courses, with a grand clubhouse and a beach club lagoon below. It makes the ideal partner to Valderrama and Sotogrande on a western Costa del Sol trip, modern in scale but classic in feel.

05

Real Club de Golf Las Brisas

Robert Trent Jones Sr · 1968 · Marbella

The jewel of Marbella's Golf Valley, a Robert Trent Jones Sr design opened in 1968 in Nueva Andalucia that has hosted the World Cup and the Spanish Open. Classic Trent Jones, with raised, well defended greens, water in play across the back nine and the Sierra Blanca as a backdrop, it is the most testing of the Marbella courses and a worthy stablemate to his Sotogrande work. A private members club, beautifully kept, and the standout round for anyone basing a trip around Marbella.

06

Los Naranjos Golf Club

Robert Trent Jones Sr · 1977 · Marbella

Another Robert Trent Jones Sr design in the Golf Valley, opened in 1977 and named for the orange groves it was carved from, a strong, mature parkland test next door to Las Brisas. Two contrasting nines, the front more open and the back winding through trees and across a stream, give it real variety, and the conditioning and welcome are reliably good. More accessible than its neighbour, it is one of the most popular quality rounds around Marbella and an easy pairing on a Golf Valley trip.

07

La Cala Resort

Cabell Robinson · Mijas · three courses

The largest golf resort in Spain, set in the hills behind Mijas, with a Cabell Robinson trio of courses, the bigger America and Asia layouts and the shorter Europa, spread across a sweep of rolling countryside. None is a championship great, but the quality across the resort, the seclusion and the on site hotel make it one of the best stay and play bases on the coast, especially for a group that wants several courses without long transfers. A relaxed, well run counterpoint to the marquee members clubs.

08

La Quinta Golf

Benahavis · 27 holes · resort parkland

A 27 hole resort course in the hills above San Pedro and Benahavis, behind Marbella, with three combinable nines climbing and falling across attractive, well wooded terrain. The elevation gives genuinely strong views toward the coast and adds interest to a layout that rewards thoughtful club selection, and the attached hotel makes it a convenient base. It rounds out a top list as the kind of reliable, scenic resort round that fills the days between the marquee courses on a Costa del Sol golf week.

Costa del Sol golf questions

What is the best golf course on the Costa del Sol?

Real Club Valderrama at Sotogrande is the best course in the region and one of the finest in continental Europe. A Robert Trent Jones Sr layout, it hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup and years of the Volvo Masters. Finca Cortesin and Las Brisas lead the chasing pack.

Can visitors play Valderrama?

Yes, Valderrama accepts a limited number of visitor tee times, usually booked well in advance and at a premium green fee. As a private members club its access is restricted, so confirm availability and conditions directly before booking. Finca Cortesin is the most openly accessible of the elite courses here.

Where should I base a Costa del Sol golf trip?

Marbella and the Golf Valley of Nueva Andalucia put Las Brisas, Los Naranjos and La Quinta within minutes and suit a lively base. Sotogrande to the west is quieter and built around Valderrama, Sotogrande and La Reserva. Resort stays such as Finca Cortesin or La Cala work well for groups wanting golf on the doorstep.

When is the best time to golf on the Costa del Sol?

Spring and autumn, roughly March to May and September to November, give the most comfortable temperatures and the best course conditions. The region plays year round and is a popular winter sun golf escape, though high summer can be hot and the courses busiest over holiday weeks.
