Shoulder Season Golf: The Smart Buyer's Calendar

The biggest savings in golf travel come not from where you go but when. Play the weeks on either side of a destination's peak and you trade a sliver of daylight or warmth for quieter tee sheets and markedly lower prices. This is the month by month calendar we use to time trips, with the value windows that save the most and our verdict on each, so you book the right place at the right moment.

How to read the calendar

Every golf destination has three gears: peak, when the weather is best and the prices highest; off season, when it is cheap but unreliable or shut; and the shoulder in between, where the weather is still good and the price has fallen. The shoulder is the sweet spot, and it sits at a different time in each place. For the Mediterranean and North Africa it is broadly spring and autumn, for the Gulf and the desert it is the edges of winter, and for the British and Irish links it is May and September. The calendar below maps the best value window in every month of the year, so you can match your dates to the place where your money goes furthest.

Two rules make it work. First, book early, because the shoulder is no secret and the best hotels and tee times still sell out. Second, accept the small trade off, a little less daylight or a touch more weather risk, in exchange for a quieter, cheaper and often firmer course. Every figure here is a guide to be confirmed at the time, but the pattern holds year after year.

The eight best value windows

1Our pick

The Algarve in October and November

Southern Portugal · the golden shoulder

The single best value window in European golf. As the summer crowds leave, the Algarve stays warm into November while green fees and hotels fall sharply, and the deep roster of courses around Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Monte Rei plays in superb late season trim. Short flights and excellent food seal it. Book the moment peak rates drop in October and you catch the best of both.

Verdict: the best weather to value ratio in European golf, full stop.
2

Scotland and Ireland in May and September

The links shoulder · firm turf, lower rates

The marquee links are at their most expensive in July and August, but in May and September the daylight is still long, the turf is firm and fast, the tee sheets are quieter and the rates sit well below the summer peak. The weather is a touch less certain, which is the trade, but a fine spring or autumn day on the great links is the best value in the game.

Verdict: the smart way to play the famous links, for far less.
3

Belek in late October and November

Turkey · all inclusive value

Belek is the value champion even in peak, and the autumn shoulder sharpens the maths further, with mid twenties warmth, firm tournament courses and the cluster of all inclusive resorts at their keenest. A buddies group can play high quality golf and stay five star for a fraction of the cost elsewhere. The same applies in April on the way up.

Verdict: unbeatable group value as the autumn rates soften.
4

The Gulf in late spring and late autumn

Dubai and Abu Dhabi · the edges of the season

The Gulf golf season runs through the cool winter at peak prices, so the value sits in the warm edges, late October and November as the season reopens and March and April as it winds down. The championship courses and faultless conditioning are the same, the days are hot but playable with early tee times, and the rates are well below the midwinter high.

Verdict: the same five star desert golf, timed for the cheaper edges.
5

Arizona in November and April

Scottsdale · either side of the winter peak

Scottsdale's desert courses charge a premium through the perfect winter, so the value lies in November, as the heat breaks and the season opens, and in April, as it closes. The target style layouts are immaculate, the resort scene is superb, and the rates either side of the January to March peak can be dramatically lower for only a little more daytime warmth.

Verdict: premium desert golf at the shoulder, not the peak, price.
6

The Costa del Sol in spring and late autumn

Southern Spain · warm shoulders

The Costa del Sol holds warmth deep into autumn and warms early in spring, so March to April and late October are the value windows around the Marbella and Sotogrande courses. The championship golf at the likes of Valderrama and Finca Cortesin is the same, the coast is quieter, and the rates step down from the high summer and Easter peaks.

Verdict: serious championship golf on the coast for less.
7

Morocco in spring and autumn

Marrakech and Agadir · warm, gentle shoulders

Marrakech and Agadir are uncomfortably hot in high summer and at their best in the spring and autumn shoulders, March to May and October to November, when warm, settled days meet immaculate watered courses and the culture, souks and riads round out the trip. Rates and crowds are gentler than the winter peak, and the value, given the quality, is excellent.

Verdict: golf and a cultural escape at the ideal, cheaper, time.
8

Scandinavia in June and late August

Sweden and Finland · bright Nordic shoulders

The short Nordic season runs hot in July, so the value sits at its edges, June and late August, when the days are still long and bright but the high summer holiday rates ease. The seaside and forest courses of Sweden's west coast and Finland's lakeland are quiet, beautiful and great value, a links flavoured escape that almost nobody outside the region times deliberately.

Verdict: cool, bright and cheap, the connoisseur's shoulder play.

Shoulder season golf questions

What is shoulder season in golf?

Shoulder season is the run of weeks on either side of a destination's peak, when the weather is still good but the crowds have thinned and the prices have dropped. For the Mediterranean and the Gulf it is broadly spring and autumn, roughly April to May and October to November. For the British and Irish links it is May and September. Playing in the shoulder typically saves a meaningful amount on green fees and hotels for only a small trade off in weather, which is why experienced golf travellers plan around it.

When is the cheapest time to play golf abroad?

The cheapest weeks are deep off season, but those often come with poor weather or closed courses, so the smart buy is the shoulder rather than the trough. The best value with reliable conditions tends to be the Algarve, Spain and Turkey in late October and November or April, the Gulf in late spring and late autumn, Arizona in November, and the British and Irish links in the spring and autumn edges of their season. The exact saving moves year to year, so always confirm current rates directly before booking.

Is shoulder season golf worth it?

For most golfers, yes. You give up a little daylight and accept slightly higher weather risk in exchange for quieter tee sheets, easier access to the marquee courses, and green fees and hotels that can be markedly cheaper than the peak. On a links trip the shoulder also brings firmer turf and fewer crowds, while on a Mediterranean trip it swaps fierce summer heat for comfortable warmth. The one rule is to book early, because the value windows are no secret.

When should you book a shoulder season golf trip?

Book three to six months ahead for most shoulder season destinations, and earlier for the famous links and large groups. The shoulder is popular precisely because it pairs good weather with better value, so the best hotels and tee times still go early. Watching for the moment peak rates drop to shoulder rates, often a fixed date in the resort's calendar, lets you catch the best of both, and a trip planner can time the booking to that window.
