Why golf in Sweden

Sweden plays far more golf per head than almost any country on earth, with more than four hundred clubs and a production line of major champions to match, from Annika Sorenstam and Henrik Stenson to Ludvig Aberg. For the travelling golfer that depth means choice: a Robert Trent Jones Jr championship test outside Stockholm, classic seaside links in the far south that feel a short hop from the great courses of Britain, and a long summer of soft, green, well drained turf maintained to a standard that shames its modest green fees.

The real Swedish luxury is light. From late May to early August the sun barely sets, the courses hold dew long into the evening and you can play 36 holes and still sit down to a long dinner in daylight. Add some of the cleanest, calmest scenery in Europe, an easy hop from most of the continent and value that undercuts Spain or Scotland, and Sweden becomes one of the smartest summer trips a golfer can take.

The regions

Stockholm and Malardalen

The capital and the lakeland around it hold the country's heaviest concentration of championship golf, led by Bro Hof Slott, with Ullna and a cluster of strong clubs all within an easy drive of Arlanda.

The West Coast

The sandy Halland and Bohuslan coast from Gothenburg down to Halmstad and Bastad, home to the classic championship links of Halmstad and a string of seaside clubs on free draining ground.

Skane and the South

The warmest corner of the country, with the longest season and the best links: Falsterbo and Barseback on the coast and the modern PGA Sweden National inland, all an easy reach of Malmo and Copenhagen.

The courses that matter

Bro Hof Slott, Stadium

Robert Trent Jones Jr, 2007 · Stockholm

Ranked the number one course in Sweden and one of the finest in continental Europe, a long, immaculate parkland test along Lake Malaren that has hosted the Nordea Masters.

Bro Hof Slott, Castle

Robert Trent Jones Jr, 2010 · Stockholm

The gentler, more playable second course at Bro Hof, opened three years after the Stadium and a fine round in its own right for those who want both in a day.

Halmstad, North

Rafael Sundblom, 1938 · Tylosand

A perennial top three Swedish course on the west coast at Tylosand, laid through pine and heather, with later nines by Nils Skold and Frank Pennink and a long championship pedigree.

Falsterbo

Gunnar Bauer, 1930 · Skane

The classic links of Sweden, on a flat sandy spit at the country's south west tip with a lighthouse and the sea on three sides, the third oldest club in the country and pure seaside golf.

Barseback, Ocean and Pine

Skane, near Malmo

The championship resort club that staged the 2003 Solheim Cup and a long run of Scandinavian Masters, with two strong courses on the Oresund coast and a clubhouse built for groups.

PGA Sweden National

Bara, near Malmo

A modern 36 hole championship complex south of Malmo built to stage the biggest events in Swedish golf, with a links inspired layout and a parkland counterpart on a vast flat site.

Ullna

Stockholm

A long established lakeside course in the Stockholm archipelago, an early Swedish championship venue with water in play across a pretty, low lying parkland routing.

Vasatorp

Helsingborg, Skane

A long time championship host near Helsingborg with multiple loops, a regular on the Swedish tournament rota since the 1970s and an easy add for a southern trip.

Bastad

The Bjare Peninsula

Two courses on the scenic Bjare peninsula on the west coast, a resort town setting that pairs seaside golf with one of the prettiest corners of the country.

Getting there and around

Sweden is an easy hop from most of Europe. Stockholm Arlanda is the gateway for the capital and Bro Hof Slott, a short drive west of the city, while Gothenburg Landvetter puts you closest to the west coast clubs at Halmstad and Bastad. For a southern trip the smartest arrival is often Copenhagen, just over the Oresund bridge from Malmo, which drops you within half an hour of Falsterbo, Barseback and PGA Sweden National. Distances between regions are long, so a hire car is essential and the roads are fast, quiet and beautifully kept.

Where to stay

Match the base to the region. Around Stockholm a city hotel pairs the championship golf at Bro Hof with restaurants and the archipelago, and the club has its own accommodation for an early tee time. On the west coast the Tylosand resort beside Halmstad is the natural base, with beach and spa alongside the golf. In the south the seaside hotels of Falsterbo and Bastad and the city hotels of Malmo all work well, and one planner can line up the right base for each leg.
