The Best Golf Courses in the Hua Hin Region

Hua Hin is Thailand's royal seaside golf base, a relaxed town three hours south of Bangkok with around a dozen quality courses spread from the hills behind the town up the coast to Cha-Am. It blends championship golf, friendly caddies, year round play and great value with a beach and a night market for the down time. Here are the seven courses we rate most highly across the Hua Hin region, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

The Hua Hin region runs from the town itself, where the historic Royal Hua Hin sits beside the railway station, west into the hills where the modern championship courses were built, and north along the coast to Cha-Am, where the resort layouts cluster. A good trip treats the whole strip as one base, since the courses are all within a short drive and a group can play a different one every day from a single hotel. The golf ranges from world rated tests to gentle, good value resort rounds, which is part of the appeal for a mixed group.

We weighed course quality and tournament pedigree, the strength of the setting, the playability across a range of handicaps, and how each course fits a compact golf week. The hill courses behind the town score highest; the historic and resort courses add character and value. Every detail was checked at the time of writing. The order and the verdicts are our editors' view, so reasonable people will reorder the list. If you want these built into a costed trip, see our guide to golf in Hua Hin or our Hua Hin golf holidays, and our concierge will do the rest.

The ranking

01

Black Mountain Golf Club

Hua Hin hills · Phil Ryan, Pacific Coast Design · opened 2007 · 27 holes

The course that put Hua Hin on the world golf map, a Phil Ryan design opened in 2007 in the hills west of the town, routed through old pineapple plantations with elevation change, fast greens and a stretch of strong, memorable holes. It rose quickly to the top of the Thai rankings and has hosted Asian Tour and other professional events, with a 27 hole offering, a water park and a resort village around it. For most visitors it is the highlight of a Hua Hin trip and the natural centerpiece. The region's best course, and a genuine reason to come.

02

Banyan Golf Club (Pineapple Valley)

Hua Hin · Pirapon Namatra · opened 2008 · award winning

The other top course in the area, designed in 2008 by the leading Thai architect Pirapon Namatra and laid out across a former pineapple plantation with mountain views and a celebrated set of par 3s. Now branded Pineapple Valley, it has won awards as the best golf club experience in Asia and is many visitors' favorite in Hua Hin, polished, scenic and immaculately kept. It pairs naturally with Black Mountain for a two course week behind the town. A first class round and a serious rival for the top spot.

03

Springfield Royal Country Club, Cha-Am

Cha-Am · Jack Nicklaus · established 1993 · 27 holes

The pick of the Cha-Am courses up the coast, a Jack Nicklaus design established in 1993, with the Mountain and Lake nines by the Golden Bear and a third Valley nine added later by Schmidt-Curley. The Nicklaus holes run between the hills and water with the polish and strategic shaping you expect of his work in Thailand, and the resort makes a comfortable northern base. For a group splitting time between the Hua Hin hills and the Cha-Am beach, Springfield is the strongest course at that end. A genuine championship layout with a famous name attached.

04

Sea Pines Golf Course, Hua Hin

Hua Hin · seaside parkland · close to town

A relaxed, mature seaside course beside the Gulf within the Klai Kangwon grounds just north of the town, with pines, sea breezes and several holes near the water giving it a gentle, holiday feel. It is not a championship test, but it is enjoyable, walkable and supremely convenient, a fine choice for an easy round close to the beach or a warm up at the start of a trip. For a group that wants golf without a long drive from the hotel, it earns its place. Easygoing golf a few minutes from the sand.

05

Royal Hua Hin Golf Course

Hua Hin town · O.A. Robins · opened 1924 · Thailand's first course

Thailand's oldest course and a piece of living history, opened in 1924 beside the Hua Hin railway station and laid out by the Scottish railway engineer O.A. Robins, with the trains and the temple covered hills as a backdrop. It is short and quirky by modern standards, more charm than challenge, but the heritage and the in town location, walking distance from the beach and the night market, make it a must for the atmosphere. Play it for the history and the convenience rather than the scorecard. A characterful link to the roots of Thai golf.

06

Imperial Lake View, Cha-Am

Cha-Am · resort parkland · lakes and hills

A long established 27 hole resort course in the hills behind Cha-Am, set among lakes and low ridges with mountain views and a steady, good value reputation among the touring crowd. It is a pleasant, undemanding layout rather than a championship test, which makes it a relaxed, well priced round to round out a week of bigger courses, with a hotel on site for a northern base. Pair it with Springfield for a Cha-Am pairing away from the busier Hua Hin courses. Solid, scenic and easy on the budget.

07

Palm Hills Golf Resort, Cha-Am

Cha-Am · resort parkland · between Hua Hin and Cha-Am

A mature resort course set in the rolling ground between Hua Hin and Cha-Am, with tree lined fairways, water in play and a residential resort wrapped around it. It is a gentle, well kept layout that has long been a value favorite for visitors, handy as a mid trip change of pace or an easy first round on arrival, and close enough to both towns to suit any base. For a group wanting plenty of golf without stretching the budget, it completes the regional set. Comfortable, accessible and reliably enjoyable.

Hua Hin golf questions

What is the best golf course in the Hua Hin region?

Black Mountain Golf Club is the standout, a Phil Ryan design opened in 2007 in the hills west of Hua Hin that quickly became one of the highest rated courses in Thailand and has hosted Asian Tour and other professional events. Banyan, now branded Pineapple Valley, runs it close and has won awards as the best golf club experience in Asia. Both are a short drive from the town. Always confirm visitor access and fees directly before booking.

Is Hua Hin a good golf destination?

Hua Hin is one of Asia's best value and most relaxed golf bases, a royal seaside town three hours south of Bangkok with around a dozen quality courses between the town and Cha-Am, friendly caddies, year round golf and a beach and night market scene for the evenings. It is less hectic than Bangkok or Phuket, the courses are rarely crowded, and the cluster is compact enough to play a different layout every day from one hotel.

When is the best time to play golf in Hua Hin?

November to February is the prime window, the cool, dry season with the most comfortable temperatures and lowest humidity for walking 18 holes. March to May is hot, so book early tee times, and the wetter months from June to October still offer plenty of playable days and the best green fee deals. Always confirm conditions before booking.
