The Best Golf Courses in Hungary

Hungary is a small golf country with a few genuinely good courses and a great city break attached. From a Robert Trent Jones II resort in the west to the historic Birdland near the Austrian border, here are the six we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

Hungary will never be a high volume golf destination, with only a couple of dozen courses across the whole country, but that scarcity is part of its charm: the best courses are quiet, well priced and paired with thermal spas, lake resorts and one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities. The golf clusters in two areas. To the west, in Transdanubia and near the Austrian border, sit the country's most ambitious courses, led by a Robert Trent Jones II resort and the long established clubs around Buk and Lake Balaton. Within reach of Budapest are the historic parkland courses that introduced the modern game to the country.

We weighed design quality, conditioning, setting and the pleasure of the round, and we favoured courses a visiting golfer can realistically arrange to play, since almost all welcome green fee guests. Every fact here, from designers and opening years to host events, was checked at the time of writing. The verdicts are ours, and the order reflects our editors' view rather than any single published list. If you want any of these built into a costed trip, with Budapest and a spa folded in, that is what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Zala Springs Golf Resort

Robert Trent Jones II · Zalacsany, western Hungary

Hungary's standout course and its first true master planned golf resort, a Robert Trent Jones II design laid across a rolling estate beside the Zala River in the west of the country. Generous, beautifully shaped and immaculately presented, it brings a level of design pedigree and conditioning found nowhere else in Hungary, and is regularly ranked the national number one. With a clubhouse, fine dining and villas on site, and the thermal town of HevĂz nearby, it is the most complete golf stay in the country and a green fee friendly one.

02

Pannonia Golf and Country Club

Hans G. Erhardt, 1996 · Mariavolgy, near Budapest

For years considered the finest course in Hungary, a Hans Erhardt design set in a quiet valley at Mariavolgy, about half an hour west of Budapest. Mature, tree lined and gently rolling, it has staged many national and European Golf Association events and remains the benchmark parkland test near the capital. The combination of a serious course and easy access from Budapest makes it the natural centrepiece of a city and golf trip.

03

Birdland Golf and Country Club

Opened 1991 · Buk, near the Austrian border

The course that started modern Hungarian golf, the first 18-hole championship layout in the country when it opened at the spa town of Buk in 1991, and thoroughly renovated for its thirtieth anniversary in 2021. Set in a hundred hectares of mature parkland beside the Greenfield hotel and spa, it has hosted international events and been named Hungary's best course by the World Golf Awards more than once. Historic, well conditioned and a relaxed spa golf base near the Austrian border.

04

Hencse National Golf and Country Club

Joan Dudok van Heel, 1994 · Zselic hills, southern Hungary

Often called the most spectacular course in Hungary, laid out in 1994 to plans by the Dutch architect Joan Dudok van Heel among the rolling, wooded hills of the Zselic nature reserve in the south west, not far from the Croatian border. Secluded, scenic and routed through ninety hectares of forest and meadow, it is a beautiful and demanding round and a worthwhile detour for golfers exploring beyond Budapest and Balaton.

Opened 1998 · Tata, between Budapest and Vienna

A mature parkland course opened in 1998 on the former hunting estate of the noble Esterhazy family near the lakeside town of Tata, conveniently placed on the road between Budapest and Vienna. Hungary golf questions

What is the best golf course in Hungary?

Zala Springs Golf Resort in the west of the country, a Robert Trent Jones II design and Hungary's first master planned golf resort, is our pick for the best course in the country and is regularly ranked the national number one. Pannonia near Budapest was long the benchmark and remains a close second.

Can you combine golf in Hungary with Budapest?

Easily, and most visitors do. Pannonia and Old Lake are both within an hour or so of the capital, so you can base in Budapest, see the city and play a round or two without a long drive. For more golf, head west to the Buk, Balaton and Zala resorts, all reachable in a couple of hours from Budapest.

When is the best time to play golf in Hungary?

May to September gives the warmest, driest weather and the longest days, with early summer the sweet spot for conditioning. Spring and early autumn are quieter and better value, and pair well with the thermal spas the country is famous for. Winter golf is limited by cold and short daylight.

Are Hungarian golf courses open to visitors?

Yes. Almost every course in Hungary welcomes green fee visitors, and the resort courses such as Zala Springs and Birdland are set up around hotels and spas for travelling golfers. Green fees are modest by western European standards. Always confirm tee times and access directly before booking.
