The Best Golf Courses in Hua Hin

Hua Hin is where Thai golf began, in 1924, and a century on this royal seaside town holds several of the finest courses in the country within a short drive of one another. From Thailand's top ranked layout among the rocks and pineapple fields to the course where the game first arrived by the railway, here are the six we rate most highly, ranked, with our verdict on each and how to play it.

How we chose them

For golfers, Hua Hin has a claim no other Thai destination can make: this is where the game arrived in the kingdom, at the Royal Hua Hin course laid out beside the railway in 1924. A century later the town has quietly become one of Asia's best value quality golf bases, with a handful of genuinely fine modern courses set in the hills behind the coast, alongside the historic original. It is calmer than Bangkok and Phuket, it has a royal palace and a long beach, and it sits an easy three hours from the capital by road or a short hop by air, which makes it ideal for a relaxed week of golf with a partner or a group of friends.

We weighed design quality, conditioning, setting and tournament pedigree, and we favoured courses a visiting golfer can readily play, since all are daily fee or resort layouts with caddies included in the Thai manner. Every fact here, from designers and opening years to host events, was checked at the time of writing, and where we were not certain of a detail we have left it out rather than guess. The verdicts are ours, and the order reflects our editors' view rather than any single published list. If you want any of these built into a costed trip, that is what our concierge does.

The ranking

01

Black Mountain Golf Club

Phil Ryan, 2007 · Hin Lek Fai, in the hills behind Hua Hin

Thailand's standout course and regularly ranked the number one in the country, a Phil Ryan design that opened in 2007 across old pineapple plantation and rocky outcrops in the hills west of town. Bold, beautifully conditioned and routed around streams and granite, it hosted Asian Tour events in 2009 and 2010 and the Europe versus Asia Royal Trophy in 2011, and has since grown to twenty seven holes with a water park and resort attached. It is the most complete golf experience in Hua Hin and the obvious centrepiece of any trip here.

02

Banyan Golf Club

Pirapon Namatra, 2008 · Par 72, 7,361 yards · near Hua Hin

The closest rival to Black Mountain, a par 72 of around 7,361 yards designed by the Thai architect Pirapon Namatra on the site of an old pineapple farm, hence its former name of Pineapple Valley. Opened in October 2008, it was promptly voted Best New Course in Asia Pacific by readers of Asian Golf Monthly. The front nine plays across rolling valley fields and the back nine climbs into the hills for sweeping views, a varied and well presented round that belongs on every Hua Hin itinerary.

03

Springfield Royal Country Club

Jack Nicklaus, 1993 · Cha-am, near Hua Hin

Hua Hin's Jack Nicklaus course, the original eighteen designed by the Golden Bear and opened in 1993, with a further nine added in 2005 to make twenty seven holes. A classic Nicklaus test of strategic bunkering, water and large greens, set in gardens and lakes a short drive north at Cha-am, it delivers authentic championship golf at very fair rates. Mature, well run and with its own resort and spa, it is a comfortable base and a reliable, satisfying round.

04

Royal Hua Hin Golf Course

Opened 1924 · central Hua Hin, by the railway station

The birthplace of golf in Thailand, laid out in 1924 beside the railway to serve the British engineers and Thai aristocracy who summered in Hua Hin, and the oldest standard course in the kingdom. Short and quirky by modern standards but rich in heritage, it runs through mature trees on the edge of town in the shadow of the hills, with the famous old railway station nearby. It will not test a low handicapper the way Black Mountain does, but for atmosphere and history no round in Thailand comes close.

05

Imperial Lake View Golf Club

Cha-am, near Hua Hin

A long established resort course set among lakes in the flat country at Cha-am, north of Hua Hin, with the hills as a backdrop. Generous off the tee and built around water, it is a relaxed and affordable round rather than a championship monster, and a useful addition to a multi course week when you want an easier, scenic day. With its own accommodation on site, it suits groups looking to spread their golf across several layouts at a gentle pace.

06

Sea Pines Golf Course

Cha-am, by the coast

A characterful older course tucked among casuarina pines close to the sea at Cha-am, on land linked to the Thai military, and one of the most atmospheric short rounds in the area. Flat, breezy and lined with mature trees, it is a charming, low key counterpoint to the big modern layouts inland, and a pleasant morning's golf for those staying on the northern beaches. Modest in length but full of character, it rounds out the Hua Hin and Cha-am golf scene.

Hua Hin golf questions

What is the best golf course in Hua Hin?

Black Mountain Golf Club, a Phil Ryan design that opened in 2007, is our pick and is regularly ranked the number one course in Thailand. It hosted Asian Tour events and the Royal Trophy, and its dramatic routing through old pineapple plantation and rocky hills sets the standard for the region. Banyan Golf Club is the closest rival.

Why is Hua Hin a good golf destination?

Hua Hin is the cradle of Thai golf, home to the country's oldest course from 1924, and within a small radius it now holds several of the best courses in the country, including Thailand's top ranked layout. The seaside resort town has a royal palace, good hotels and an easy three hour drive or short flight from Bangkok, which makes it a relaxed, high quality golf base that is less hectic than Bangkok or Phuket.

When is the best time to play golf in Hua Hin?

The cool, dry season from November to February is the prime time, with comfortable temperatures and little rain. March to May is hot, and the wettest months tend to be September and October. Tee early in the day year round to avoid the midday heat. Winter is peak season for visiting golfers, so book courses and hotels ahead.

Are Hua Hin golf courses open to visitors?

Yes. Hua Hin's courses are daily fee and resort layouts that welcome visiting golfers, with caddies included as standard in Thai golf. Green fees are good value by international standards, with twilight and package rates widely available. Always confirm green fees, caddie and cart charges and tee times directly before booking.
