Golf in the Hua Hin Region
Thailand's original golf coast. The royal resort town of Hua Hin and its neighbours Cha-am and Pranburi pack a dozen courses into a short stretch of the gulf, led by Black Mountain, one of the highest rated layouts in Asia, and anchored by Royal Hua Hin, the first course ever built in the kingdom.

Why golf here
Golf in Thailand began here. Royal Hua Hin opened beside the railway station in 1924, the first course built in the kingdom, and the royal patronage that came with the summer palace turned this stretch of the gulf into the country's most established golf coast. A century on, the Hua Hin region is one of the most relaxed and rewarding golf destinations in Asia, free of the traffic of Bangkok and a short hop from it.
The depth is the appeal. Black Mountain, a Phil Ryan design in the hills inland, is rated among the very best courses in Asia and has hosted European and Asian Tour events. Banyan and Jack Nicklaus's Springfield at Cha-am add two more modern championship tests, and a tier of friendly value courses fills out an easy week of golf. Add warm gulf weather in the cool season, good resorts and a town with night markets, beaches and fine seafood, and the region suits buddies, couples and families alike.

The courses to build around
From a top three in Asia layout to the course where Thai golf began, these are the rounds to plan a Hua Hin region trip around. They spread along the coast from Cha-am through Hua Hin to Pranburi, with most within forty minutes of one another.
1. Black Mountain Golf Club
The undisputed headline. Phil Ryan routed Black Mountain through a former pineapple and rubber plantation in the hills inland from Hua Hin, and it has been rated among the top courses in Asia almost from the day it opened, hosting European and Asian Tour events. Bold elevation change, water in play and immaculate conditioning make it a genuine championship test, and the round every visiting golfer should plan around.
2. Banyan Golf Club
Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley's 2008 design, named the best new course in the Asia Pacific the year after it opened and now operating as Pineapple Valley, climbs through old plantation land with sweeping coastal and mountain views from the higher holes. It is a varied, strategic and beautifully presented layout, and the strongest of the region's modern championship courses alongside Black Mountain.
3. Springfield Royal Country Club
A Jack Nicklaus signature design at Cha-am, opened in 1993 and stretching to over 7,000 yards across rolling, well bunkered ground. It is a polished resort course with a strong set of par 3s and ample room off the tee, an enjoyable championship round that pairs naturally with a stay on the Cha-am beach to the north.
4. Royal Hua Hin Golf Course
History on every hole. Laid out beside the railway station in 1924 by a Scottish railway engineer, Royal Hua Hin is the oldest course in Thailand and a charming, walkable parkland in the hills above the town. It is shorter and gentler than the modern championship courses, but a round here is a round through the origins of Thai golf, and the value is excellent.
5. Imperial Lake View Golf Club
A friendly, well priced resort course set among lakes near Cha-am, with generous fairways and a relaxed pace that make it a good change of gear between the championship tests. It is the kind of enjoyable, affordable round that rounds out a longer trip without stretching the budget.

Getting there and where to stay
Almost everyone flies into Bangkok and transfers down to the coast, around two and a half to three hours by road, or by the slower scenic train to the historic Hua Hin station. There is a small regional airport at Hua Hin with limited flights. Once there, a private driver or hire car makes light work of moving between courses spread from Cha-am through Hua Hin to Pranburi.
Hua Hin town is the natural base, with everything from grand colonial era resorts to modern beach hotels, night markets and a long sandy beach. Cha-am to the north is quieter and sits close to Springfield and Imperial Lake View, while Pranburi to the south is the calmest option. Most golfers stay central in Hua Hin and play out in each direction.
