The Silver Coast vs The Lisbon Coast
An hour of motorway separates Portugal's two best golf coasts outside the Algarve. The Silver Coast, north toward Obidos, is the dramatic one, all clifftop dunes and big Atlantic views. The Lisbon Coast, at Cascais and Sintra, is the polished one, with beaches, palaces and the city on the doorstep. We compared the courses, the costs and the trips, and the right choice comes down to what you want around the golf.

The verdict
For the golf itself, the Silver Coast wins. The Costa de Prata, around an hour north of Lisbon near Obidos and Peniche, is home to the most spectacular golf in the region: Praia d'El Rey, a Cabell Robinson design from 1997 that runs along dunes and pine above the Atlantic with views to the Berlengas islands, and West Cliffs, a Dye Designs course opened in 2017 that tumbles through a raw clifftop dunescape and ranks among Europe's best modern builds. Add Seve Ballesteros's Royal Obidos and you have a compact, dramatic and often better value cluster that rewards the golf focused group.
But for an all round trip, the Lisbon Coast is the smarter base. Thirty minutes west of the airport at Cascais, Estoril and Sintra, it pairs serious golf, Arthur Hills's Oitavos Dunes and Robert Trent Jones Junior's Penha Longa among them, with beaches, restaurants, the palaces of Sintra and the city of Lisbon itself. It is the easier sell for a mixed group or a couple, and the shorter transfer matters on a short break. The verdict: choose the Silver Coast if the golf and the scenery are the priority, the Lisbon Coast if you want golf plus a city and coast holiday, and since they are only an hour apart, the best trips simply combine them.

Who should pick which
Pick the Silver Coast if...
The golf and the views are the trip. Praia d'El Rey and West Cliffs are, between them, one of the most scenic 36 hole pairings in Europe, two clifftop courses minutes apart that justify the drive north on their own. The coast is quieter than Cascais, the resorts are geared to golfers, and the value tends to be better, all of which suits a buddies group or a society that wants to play hard and unwind without distraction. Build it with our best golf courses in Portugal ranking, then read the Silver Coast guide for the full cluster.
Pick the Lisbon Coast if...
You want golf woven into a proper holiday. Basing at Cascais or Estoril puts Oitavos Dunes and Penha Longa within easy reach, while the beaches, the Sintra palaces, the restaurants and the whole of Lisbon fill the non golf hours, which is ideal for a couple or a mixed group. The 30 minute airport transfer makes it the better choice for a short break too. See our Lisbon Coast golf holidays page, and the Algarve vs Lisbon Coast comparison if you are still weighing regions.
Or combine them, which is what we usually advise. With only an hour between the two, a week can split between a Lisbon Coast base for the city and the beaches and a few nights on the Silver Coast for the clifftop golf; our Lisbon and Silver Coast itinerary shows how it slots together, and a wider Portugal golf holiday can fold in the Algarve too.

Silver Coast vs Lisbon Coast questions
Is the Silver Coast or the Lisbon Coast better for golf?
It depends on what the trip is for. The Silver Coast, around an hour north of Lisbon, is the more dramatic golf destination, headlined by the clifftop pairing of Praia d'El Rey and West Cliffs, and it is quieter and often better value. The Lisbon Coast, at Cascais and Sintra just west of the city, has Oitavos Dunes and Penha Longa plus beaches, restaurants and easy airport access, which makes it the stronger all round base. For pure golf and scenery, the Silver Coast. For a blend of golf, city and coast, the Lisbon Coast.
How far apart are the Silver Coast and the Lisbon Coast?
About an hour by car. The Lisbon Coast courses at Cascais, Estoril and Sintra sit roughly 30 minutes west of Lisbon airport, while the Silver Coast around Obidos and Peniche is about an hour to the north. That proximity means many Portugal golf trips combine the two, basing on one coast and making a day trip to the other, or splitting the stay between them.
How much does golf cost on the Silver Coast and the Lisbon Coast in 2026?
Indicative 2026 peak green fees on both coasts run roughly from around 100 to 200 euros, with the marquee names such as West Cliffs, Oitavos Dunes and Penha Longa toward the top and shoulder season rates lower. The Silver Coast tends to offer slightly better value and strong stay and play packages. All figures are indicative and change with season and demand, so always confirm directly before booking.
Which is better for a couples or non golf trip?
The Lisbon Coast, comfortably. Cascais and Estoril are polished seaside towns with beaches, restaurants, the palaces of Sintra and the whole of Lisbon half an hour away, so non golfing partners are well served between rounds. The Silver Coast is quieter and more focused on the golf and the resorts, which suits a dedicated golf group more than a mixed trip. Many couples base on the Lisbon Coast and day trip north for the clifftop courses.
