Why golf here

Two coasts, one city

The Lisbon Coast is really two golf regions that share an airport. West of the city, the Cascais and Sintra shoreline holds Oitavos Dunes, rated the best course in Portugal, and the wooded Robert Trent Jones Jr. layout at Penha Longa beneath the Sintra hills. An hour north, the Silver Coast around Obidos is wilder and more exposed, home to the Cabell Robinson links at Praia D'El Rey and the dramatic Cynthia Dye links at West Cliffs.

What ties them together is variety and value. You can play a true exposed links in the morning and a sheltered pine and granite parkland the same week, base yourself in a UNESCO listed city of trams and seafood, and pay well below what comparable golf costs in northern Europe. The season runs almost the whole year, with the kindest weather in spring and autumn.

The courses that matter

The Lisbon Coast courses to build around

The leading rounds split between the Cascais coast west of Lisbon and the Silver Coast to the north around Obidos, all within an easy drive of the capital. These are the courses to plan a week around.

01

Oitavos Dunes

Cascais · Arthur Hills · par 71

Rated the number one course in Portugal, an Arthur Hills design set among reforested dunes and umbrella pines inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. A genuine links feel with Atlantic views, firm turf and the freedom to play the ground game. The natural centrepiece of any Lisbon Coast trip.

02

Penha Longa, Atlantic

Sintra · Robert Trent Jones Jr. · par 72

A 1992 Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that tumbles through pine, granite outcrops and a wooded valley below an old monastery, with the back nine climbing for views over the Sintra hills. It hosted the Portuguese Open in 1994 and remains among the finest parkland tests in continental Europe.

03

Praia D'El Rey

Obidos · Cabell Robinson · par 73

Cabell Robinson's 1997 layout on the Silver Coast mixes wind exposed dune holes beside the Atlantic with sheltered stretches through pine forest. Long, handsome and varied, with the Berlengas Islands on the horizon, it has anchored golf on this coast for a generation.

04

West Cliffs

Obidos · Cynthia Dye · opened 2017

A pure links by Cynthia Dye that opened in 2017 and was quickly named one of Europe's best new courses. Routed across rolling dunes high above the ocean north of Obidos, it is raw, exposed and spectacular, the modern counterpoint to its older neighbour Praia D'El Rey.

05

Royal Obidos

Obidos · Seve Ballesteros · par 72

Among the last design work of Severiano Ballesteros, a varied resort course with ocean and lagoon views above the medieval town of Obidos. Generous off the tee with cleverly defended greens, it rounds out a Silver Coast trip alongside Praia D'El Rey and West Cliffs.

When to go and costs

Indicative green fees and the season

The Lisbon Coast plays almost year round, with spring and autumn the sweet spot for firm turf and mild air, and summer warmer and busier. The marquee Cascais courses command the highest fees, while the Silver Coast links offer more golf for the money. Book Oitavos and Penha Longa ahead in peak weeks; the Obidos courses are easier to walk on.

Indicative 2026 high season visitor green fees in euros. Spring and autumn shoulder rates and twilight slots run lower. Always confirm directly before booking.

Getting there and around

Base in Lisbon, then move north

Lisbon airport is one of the best connected in southern Europe and sits within forty minutes of the Cascais coast and around an hour of the Silver Coast. A hire car is essential, as the two golf regions spread along the shoreline and reward the freedom to move between Cascais, Sintra and Obidos.

For the best conditions and the lowest fees, plan for spring in April to June or autumn in September to October, when the turf is firm and the air mild. Summer is hotter and busier, while winter still offers playable golf on the kinder days, one of the reasons the coast suits a year round trip.
