Who this trip suits

The Costa del Sol is the home of the society trip, and it earns the title for good reason: seventy courses packed into the coast between Malaga and Sotogrande, short transfers between them, reliable sunshine from September to June, and a deep bench of resort style courses built to move a big field with buggies and a halfway house. It suits golf societies, captain's trips, old boys' groups and corporate fourballs of anything from eight to forty players, the kind of group that wants a competitive Stableford by day, a long dinner by night, and someone else to handle the logistics. The depth of value courses keeps the cost sensible across a large field, while a single bucket list round gives the week its headline.

Build the trip around two or three society friendly courses where the whole group can play together with buggies, then add one aspirational round, La Reserva or Finca Cortesin, and for the connoisseurs a hard won tee time at Valderrama. Base everyone in one hotel around Marbella or Mijas, keep the drives short, and the trip runs itself.

The courses to build around

Mijas Golf Los Lagos parkland fairway framed by pines, Costa del Sol, Spain

Mijas Golf, Los Lagos

Robert Trent Jones Sr. · Par 71 · Indicative 2026 green fee from around €52

The classic society course of the coast: a flat, walkable Robert Trent Jones layout with wide fairways and big greens that lets a whole group play together at a sensible price. Two courses on one site, buggies, a halfway house and easy logistics make it the dependable backbone of a society week.

Los Naranjos Golf Club in Nueva Andalucia, Marbella, Spain

Los Naranjos

Robert Trent Jones Sr., 1977 · Par 72 · Indicative 2026 green fee from around €75

A mature, much loved parkland course in the Nueva Andalucia golf valley behind Puerto Banus, stronger than its gentle reputation with orange groves, a creek and a fine set of par 5s. Central, well run and big group friendly, it is one of the best mid tier rounds on the coast.

La Reserva Club Sotogrande rolling above the bay, Spain

La Reserva de Sotogrande

Cabell Robinson · Par 72 · Indicative high season fee around €260

The modern showpiece of Sotogrande, rolling through hills above the bay with immaculate conditioning and a sandy beach club to retire to afterward. The aspirational mid week round that lifts a society trip a level, and a fine warm up for those heading on to Valderrama.

Finca Cortesin championship course near Casares, Costa del Sol, Spain

Finca Cortesin

Cabell Robinson · Par 72 · 2023 Solheim Cup host · Indicative fee €385 to €460

The 2023 Solheim Cup host and one of the finest and best conditioned courses in continental Europe, generous off the tee and exacting around the greens. Buggy, range balls and trolley are included, which softens the premium. The marquee round of a serious society trip.

Real Club Valderrama among cork oaks in Sotogrande, Spain

Real Club Valderrama

Robert Trent Jones Sr. · Par 71 · Indicative 2026 green fee €600

Continental Europe's Augusta, a Ryder Cup and long time tour host threaded through cork oaks with the most demanding greens in Spain. Visitor tee times are limited and the round carries a mandatory forecaddie, so it is the connoisseur's day rather than the whole field's, and worth booking early.

Designers, pars and tournament history verified June 2026. Green fees are indicative third party figures for the 2026 season and change with season, demand and group rate. Always confirm directly before booking.

A sample four night society format

Day 1

Arrive and warm up

Fly into Malaga, transfer to a Marbella or Mijas hotel and shake off the travel with an afternoon nine or the range. Welcome dinner and the draw for the week's teams.

Day 2

Mijas, Los Lagos

The whole society out together in buggies on a course built for a big field. A team Stableford, a halfway house stop, prizes over dinner.

Day 3

La Reserva de Sotogrande

Step up to the showpiece round, then the beach club or the pool. Nearest the pin and longest drive added to the order of merit.

Day 4

Los Naranjos or Finca Cortesin

A central, group friendly finish at Los Naranjos, or a marquee day at Finca Cortesin for a more ambitious society. Final prize giving and the captain's speech.

Add a day

Valderrama for the keen

Split a small group off for the bucket list round at Valderrama while the rest take a rest day on the beach or by the pool.

Drive times along the coast are short, typically fifteen to forty five minutes between courses and the hotel, so a society stays together and the days never feel rushed.

Best time to book

The Costa del Sol golf season runs September to June, with spring, March to May, and autumn, October and November, the sweet spots for warm days, peak conditioning and lively but manageable tee sheets. Midwinter is cheaper and usually fine, with the small risk of a wet or windy day, while July and August are too hot for a full field and given over to the beach. Society dates in spring fill fast, so block a large group's hotel and tee times several months ahead, and book any Valderrama or Finca Cortesin round as early as you can.

Society trip questions

What size group works for a Costa del Sol society trip?

Anything from a four ball up to thirty or forty players. The course density lets a big group split across nearby courses or go out in waves, with buggies and halfway houses keeping a large field moving. Eight to twenty four is ideal for one hotel and a shared evening.

When is the best time to go?

The season runs September to June, with spring and autumn the best for weather, conditioning and value. Midwinter is mild and cheaper with a small weather risk; July and August are too hot for a full field. Spring society dates fill early.

What do green fees cost for societies in 2026?

Indicative 2026 fees run from around €52 to €83 at value courses like Mijas and Los Naranjos, around €260 at La Reserva, €385 to €460 at Finca Cortesin with buggy included, and €600 at Valderrama. Groups usually secure better rates through an operator. Confirm directly before booking.

Can you arrange the hotel, buggies, tee times and prizes?

Yes. Submit a brief and one concierge costs the whole society trip to the head, including a hotel that takes the group, buggies, the tee sheet, transfers and a format with prizes, then routes it to a vetted operator. You organise once and everyone just plays.
